By the power of Grayskull, can none lift the sword of power and helm a new He-Man movie? I’ve always held a soft spot for the legendary 1987 He-Man movie that saw Dolph Lundgren actually become a cartoon character thanks to his ridiculous amount of muscles, and a remake has been on the cards for years now.

John “GI-Joe: Retaliation” Chu was originally supposed to direct that movie, but has since dropped out. The current shortlist however? It makes me feel like there may be some hope after all for Eternia.

Sony Pictures and Escape Artists has the following directors in mind, according the Wrap, for the Masters of the Universe movie:

  • Mike “Another Earth” Cahill
  • Chris “Robot Chicken” McKay
  • Harald “The Karate Kid” Zwart

That’s some good talent right there. Zwart is most likely the go-to choice here, as his remake of the Karate Kid did some good business and pulled in over $359 million worldwide, while his work on The Pink Panther 2 and Mortal Instruments: City of Bones gives him the experience necessary for such a project. McKay on the other hand, will most likely know a thing or two about the property at least, as the cult hit series Robot Chicken has used quite a bit of He-Man content over a half dozen series.

Meanwhile, Cahill is no slouch himself, having directed low budget sci-fi films already, such as Another Earth and I, Origins. For those of you who never grew up in the 1980s or were forced to watch mid-2000s SABC programming that that was determined to spend as few bucks as possible, He-Man told the tale of Prince Adam, a young teen who could transform into a nipple-harnessed mountain of man-muscle thanks to his magic sword. As goofy as that sounds, it was freakin’ awesome on a weekly basis, so I’m all in for a new reboot.

  1. Will old cartoon & toy nostalgia really sell a movie 30 years later?
