Last week saw the passing of 97 year old Louie Zamperini. Who was Louis Zamperini, you ask? Well that’s what Unbroken is hoping to explain to you. Directed by Angelina Jolie in her sophomore feature film effort behind the camera, and adapted by none other than the Coen Bros, this biopic show’s off Zamperini’s fascinating, inspirational life, which saw him overcome all kinds of hardship to not only become an Olympic athlete at the 1936 Berlin Olympics, but to also survive the hellish ordeal of having the plane he was on shot down in WWII, having to survive being stranded at sea for 47 days, and then also being held as Japanese POW for nearly 2 years, during which he was singled out for cruelties by one of Japan’s most wanted war criminals because of his Olympic fame.
And still he would not give up on life. While here we get floored by just a slight case of the sniffles.

Academy Award winner Angelina Jolie directs and produces “Unbroken,” an epic drama that follows the incredible life of Olympian and war hero Louis “Louie” Zamperini (Jack O’Connell) who, along with two other crewmen, survived in a raft for 47 days after a near-fatal plane crash in WWII—only to be caught by the Japanese Navy and sent to a prisoner-of-war camp.
Adapted from Laura Hillenbrand’s (“Seabiscuit: An American Legend”) enormously popular book, “Unbroken” brings to the big screen Zamperini’s unbelievable and inspiring true story about the resilient power of the human spirit.
Starring alongside O’Connell are Domhnall Gleeson and Finn Wittrock as Phil and Mac—the airmen with whom Zamperini endured perilous weeks adrift in the open Pacific—Garrett Hedlund and John Magaro as fellow POWs who find an unexpected camaraderie during their internment, Alex Russell as Zamperini’s brother, Pete, and in his English-language feature debut, Japanese actor Miyavi as the brutal camp guard known only to the men as “The Bird.”
Unbroken stars Jack O’Connell, Domhnall Gleeson, Garrett Hedlund, Finn Wittrock, John Magaro, Alex Russell and Miyavi. It is scheduled for release on Christmas Day, 2014.
