If there’s one thing that can spark endless debate amongst fans everywhere, it’s which sci-fi universe rules them all, which sci-fi universe overanalyses findings, and whose spaceships brings them together and then in the darkness blows them all to smithereens with LAZORS! PEW PEW PEW! No Captain Picard, I expect you to die! PEW! BOOM! MWUHAHA! Sorry, I got carried away there BUT…

Over on DeviantArt artist Dirk Loechel has just wrapped up a year-long project to graphically represent and accurately compare hundreds of spaceships from famous movie, television and videogame franchises into one neat 4.5MB,  4,268×5,690 pixel image. The amount of work that’s gone into this is staggering and should provide ammunition for the fanboy wars for years to come. As per the man himself:

The last update:

For real this time: This is the final major content update, though if there are issues I’ll still fix them. I also haven’t forgotten I wanted to vectorize the writing. It’s still on the radar. But content-wise, I think that is about all I can put in.

Also, I added the ISS. For scale. It’s on the top, with a yellow frame so it’s relatively easy to find.

Above is a small version of the chart, click the image to see the full size version in all its glory (remember, it’s 4.5MB!). He’s included ships from the likes of Star Wars, Star Trek, Babylon 5, Robotech, Warhammer 40K, EVE Online, and far too many others to mention. Ships had to be between 100m and 24,000m in length in order to be eligible for inclusion.

Holy tin cans in space, Batman! Look at the size of some of those things. Who knew the mother ship that Randy Quaid suppositoried (I made up a new word!) with his F-18 in Independence Day was that big? That Spacing Guild Heighliner from Dune? I’ve always known Warhammer 40K Battle Barges were powerful, but look at those brutes – For The Emperor! Remember that feeling of awe the first time an Imperial Star Destroyer passed over youon screen? It’s totally justified. In the case of Cylon Base Stars, not so much – they should be called Base Sparkles. And just look at those cute Star Trek ships, OMG they’re so adorable you guys!

Over on the deviantart forum the one question I had was asked and answered “Where’s the Tardis?”. The answer from artist DirkLoechel? “It’s too big and too small for the chart”. What a winner!

  1. Cylon Base Sparkle is still my favourite – design is just cool. Externally anyway, internally it’s nothing special.

The Romulan mining vessel? It’s there, 2/3s up on the right hand side next to the ugly brown thing & above the Homeworld ship. Not really a very memorable ship for me.
