Monday Box Office Report

Exodus: Gods and Kings may have finally toppled Mockingjay this past weekend, but it did so barely. Opening at 3503 locations, Exodus barely raked in $24.5 million across North America. Compared to other biblical epics, that’s far less than Darren Aronofsky’s Noah ($43.7 million) on opening weekend, and about on par with Son Of God ($25.6 million), a film that was made for much less.

Still, December releases generally aren’t favourable to high budget flicks. Internationally, the film has made $74.3 million so far, and the numbers could eventually add up to make it decently profitable over the holiday season. Opening at far fewer cinemas, Chris Rock’s Top Five debuted to 979 screens, making $7.2 million. That’s above the previous efforts of Rock’s last film, I Think I Love My Wife, which made $5.7 million at double the screens. Here’s a look at the weekend estimates of the rest of the North American box office:

• The Theory Of Everything – $2.5 Million
• Wild – $1.5 Million

Top ten departures this week include Birdman, Gone Girl and The Pyramid. David Fincher’s Gone Girl has had a solid 10 week run in the top ten in North America, making over $344.4 million worldwide. That’s one of the biggest hauls ever for the cult favourite director. Meanwhile, Birdman’s limited run has been largely constrained to just the US and Mexico, making $21.5 million in total over nine weeks. Don’t count this film out however, as it happens to be carrying some heavy Oscar buzz.
