Somebody is going to die in CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR

Civil War (1)Avengers 2.5 Captain America: Civil War is shaping up to be one hell of a movie. With just about every Marvel hero and their cousin showing up, it’s going to have a cast that rivals and possibly eclipses the Avengers movies. And with that many people on-screen, and with the film supposedly setting up the massive universe rearranging battles to come in Avengers: Infinity War, it’s not unexpected that some of the characters may not make it to the end credits alive. And according to a report from MoviePilot, at least one of the them definitely won’t.

On Tuesday, May 12th, Captain America: Civil War will be filming what is simply being referred to as “a funeral scene” in downtown Atlanta, Georgia. The production is currently operating under the working title of Sputnik, and extras are being asked to wear formal, solid black attire for the event. The weather forecast for Tuesday is a cloudy day, with thunderstorms throughout the afternoon, making for a sullen, grim funeral.

Now, this being a comic book movie, a funeral wouldn’t be too shocking a revelation to comic book fans, because spoiler alert: Superheroes die. A lot. But then they usually get better. And back in 2008, it was Steve Rogers aka Captain America’s turn to meet his maker, so to speak. After the events of hero-vs-hero Civil War (which is actually the inspiration for this movie), Cap finally realized that fighting Iron Man and his government mandated group of heroes was not the answer and turned himself in to the authorities. However, while in custody he is assassinated by the villainous Crossbones (with some help from a brainwashed Sharon Carter).

While Cap eventually got resurrected about two years later (in the most ridiculous manner possible, so I won’t bother explaining it here), this allowed his once-sidekick Bucky Barnes, who had become the amnesic Winter Soldier, to pick up the shield and become the new Captain America in his absence.

Now, unless you haven’t been paying attention at all to the MCU movies of the last few years, you would know that we’re about to see the Civil War, Frank Grillo will be back as Crossbones alongside Emily Van Camp returning as Sharon Carter. And then lets not forget this shot of Sebastian Stan’s Bucky Barnes from Captain America: Winter Soldier.

In other words, all the elements of the death of Chris Evans’ Steve are right there in front of us. Meaning that word of a funeral scene being shot is certainly going to be heavily foreboding to fans. Evans is one of the brightest stars of the MCU and we know he still has a few movies in his contract, so would Marvel Studios actually kill him off?

Devin Faraci over at Birth.Movies.Death offers up an alternative, far less violent theory: The funeral is actually for Cap’s WWII sweetheart Peggy Carter. We briefly saw her, played by incredibly Hayley Atwell, in Winter Soldier, and it was quite clear that the old, bed-ridden ex-agent didn’t have much time left. Faraci theorizes that Peggy’s death – the last thing still connecting Cap to his pre-thawed out WWII life – will be the catalyst to setting him on a more dramatic path against Tony Stark and his modern sensibilities. Also, by taking Peggy out of the picture, it opens up the movie to the possibility of the comic book romance between Cap and Peggy’s grand-niece Sharon.

It’s certainly a solidly argued hypothesis, and I think that Devin may be right: Peggy is going to pass away. But I also think that Cap is still going to die, because of one simple reason that I mentioned earlier: Dead superheroes almost always get better. I think Marvel is going to kill Cap off at the end of Civil War. Whether Bucky becomes the new Captain America or not, I’m not sure, but I feel that Steve’s death and absence is going to be felt by all the characters and really pushed hard in the overlapping narrative throughout the rest of the Phase 3 movie lineup, up to and including Avengers: Infinity War – Part 1. And then things will change.

As you may recall, of all the Infinity Stones – the all powerful gems that has been at the heart of the entire MCU’s overarching story and which the evil Thanos has been trying to collect for years – there are two still unaccounted for. I expect the Soul Stone will probably be turning up in either Doctor Strange or Thor: Ragnarok. That just leaves the Time Stone – you know the one that can be used to rewind time and undo events at the will of the wielder. You get where I’m going with this?

What if part of Avengers: Infinity War – Part 1 will see the heroes in a race against Thanos to get the last remaining Infinity Stone? He wants it to complete his Infinity Gauntlet and destroy the universe, and they want it to not just stop him, but also resurrect their beloved leader when they need him most. This will allow Cap to return in Infinity War – Part 2, rally the troops and take the fight back to Thanos. Maybe spin in some story element about how Cap gets resurrected somewhere in outer space (hey, it’s comic books!), pulling the Guardians of the Galaxy into the mix as well, and you would have yourself one hell of a finale to (pun fully intended) cap off a decade’s worth of movies.
