There is this book by author S. Bergstrom called The Cruelty. The story of said book is a somewhat familiar one, although not exactly. See if you recognize it:

When her diplomat father is kidnapped and the U.S. Government refuses to help, 17-year-old Gwendolyn Bloom sets off across the underbelly of Europe to rescue him. Following the only lead she has—the name of a Palestinian informer living in France—Gwendolyn plunges into a brutal world of arms smuggling and human trafficking. As she journeys from the slums of Paris, to the nightclubs of Berlin, to the violent heart of the most feared criminal family in Prague, Gwendolyn discovers that to survive in this new world she must become every bit as cruel as the men she’s hunting.

So what we have here seems to be a revisit of a similar tale starring old guy turned action hero with a particular set of skills Liam Neeson in Taken – which you may recall was mainly about a father searching for his daughter all over Europer and was quite a fun set of movies if you can excuse the fact that someone close to his character always gets, well taken.

Taken

Now according to Variety Paramount and Jerry Bruckheimer have secured the rights to the book and will be transforming the female action hero story ala Taken and turning it into a feature film for our enjoyment.

The issue for me here is that it is really something we have seen before – even in a flipped around way – and so it will be interesting to see what the pairing will do to bring us something unexpected.

There have been a fair share of recent movies revolving around young woman kicking some serious butt, like Hit Girl in Kick Ass, Tris in Divergent, Katniss in The Hunger Games and I’m reminded most recently of Final Girl starring Abigail Breslin – in which she certainly was no little miss sunshine.

Now I can’t say that I know that much more about the story in The Cruelty as I haven’t read the book, but it does leave me wondering what background 17-year-old Gwendolyn has that would enable her to take on the underbelly of Europe.

There has been no talk of who will star in The Cruelty and with Bruckheimer currently in post-production on Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales which comes out on July 7th, 2017 as well as developing Top Gun 2 for Paramount, this movie might be sitting on a shelf for a while yet.
