Sony looking at a SALT TV series

I’m starting to lose track off all the movie-to-TV-series adaptions that are currently airing and, be it actively or potentially, in development. It seems like there’s a new one announced every couple of weeks, and now Sony are getting in on that action as they head back to the Salt mine.

For those that need a brief refresher, Salt was the reasonably well-regarded 2010 action-thriller that starred Angelina Jolie as Evelyn Salt, a CIA spy / Russian sleeper agent. Shenanigans, cover blown, presidential assassination plots, action, she won in the end. Spoiler alert, I guess.

Anyway, at the European Film Market Diego Suarez, Sony’s Senior Vice-President of International Television Production and holder of the record for longest title I’ve ever had to type out, has been shopping the project around to broadcasters and production partners. He’s quoted as saying of the project, courtesy of ScreenDaily, “we want to bring it to Europe in a completely different way.” Bring it to Europe? Interesting.

This announcement comes as a bit of a surprise because when last we heard, albeit way back in 2012, a Salt 2 was in the works and had just gotten a new writer and screenplay. Clearly that didn’t pan out the way Sony had hoped, and thus the switch to TV as they dig into their back catalogue for potential TV adaptions.

And Salt‘s one I think could work quite well on the small screen, particularly if I assume correctly and the show’s based in Europe. That would enable the show to bounce around locations in Western and Eastern Europe quite easily and give it a nice globe-trotting feel, while also touching on many of the geo-political issues and tensions on the continent. There’s also plenty of opportunities for presidential-assassination-of-the-week plots.

What do you think? Is this adaption worth it’s salt or should we take it with a pinch of salt? …Damn it, I was doing so well with the salt references.
