Forget about the tacos and chimichangas, it seems that the Merc With the Mouth is actually rolling in the dough! Deadpool already blew away all box office predictions when it debuted in February, and promptly became the biggest movie in the world at the time. It’s $132 million opening weekend ($154 million if you count the Presidents Day public holiday) gave it a laundry list of broken records, including the biggest R-rated domestic opening of all time. And now it can add another feather in its cap.
Having been on the circuit now for 7 weeks, it was only able to pull in an additional $4.8 million this weekend past, but that was enough to bring it’s worldwide tally to $746 million. That gives it $4 million more than The Matrix Reloaded‘s $742 million, officially making it the highest grossing R-rated film of all time!
And to think that this movie only really came about because of star Ryan Reynolds and director Tim Miller’s dogged determination in the face of a whole litany of negative studio execs who thought the hardcore comic book source material would never work on-screen.
On the domestic front, Deadpool is still sitting in third place for R-rated movies with $349 million, but it should surpass American Sniper‘s $350 million any day now. The Passion of the Christ is still sitting at the top of the R-rated heap in the US though with $370 million. Looking at the rate of box office drop-off, it’s hugely unlikely that the comic book superhero movie would ever reach or overtake Mel Gibson’s religious drama, but I’m sure there are bunch people hoping that that’s exactly what happens just so that they can use the headline “Deadpool beats Jesus”.
