Oh, yes! PUNISHER series ordered by Netflix!

Oh, this news makes me so happy! I’ve already explained why I think season two of Daredevil is superior to season one, and in that explanation I touch on Jon Bernthal’s depiction of the rather angry Punisher. And what a depiction it is. Angry, psychotic, VIOLENCE INCARNATE with a side order of vulnerability and sadness – he did such a good job people wanted him to appear in his own stand-alone series.

Well, ladies and gents, you are getting what you want! Marvel have now officially announced that Netflix have ordered a standalone series for The Punisher, following on the aforementioned Daredevil, Jessica Jones and the upcoming Luke Cage and Iron Fist.

Marvel has done a damn fine job of late giving fans exactly what they ask for while still putting new contemporary twists on classic stories and characters. Just look at Captain America: Civil War for the latest example of this balancing act. That film, as a result, brought in stellar reviews and around $200.4 million this last weekend, putting it just a fraction behind Avengers: Age of Ultron – the biggest difference being that it’s actually a GREAT movie (I’m off to watch it again at IMAX tomorrow). So I am fairly certain that with the same type of approach, the Punisher is going to blow all our tiny minds, possibly with a bazooka or sticky grenade.

Steve Lightfoot of Hannibal fame will take the role of executive producer and had this to say:

For me, the complexity and unpredictability of Frank Castle make him an incredibly compelling character and I couldn’t be more excited to dive into his world. After watching Jon’s performance in ‘Marvel’s Daredevil’ I could not be more excited to be working with him to further develop and progress the story of this anti-hero in a show of his own.

Have a look at the ‘teaser’ video. It’s the nursery rhyme that Frank Castle used to sing to his daughter, and to be honest it’s pretty damn scary.

Yeah, that’s something I would sing to my child… This really has me excited. I thought that the detail given to Castle (no, not the one of Fillion fame!) was better than Elodie Yung’s Elektra and certainly deserves more of a look. Jon is an intense actor and with a decent script this could surpass even Jessica Jones in badassness. Sadly we have no idea on when the series will land, though I would say that with a second season of Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and the Defenders coming up it may be a few years.
