We heard last week that the Godzilla sequel has been pushed back to 2019, instead of its original 2018 release with most speculating that it was to add more time in making the movie, as director Gareth Edwards was currently finishing up work on Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. Some recent news that has come out however which may provide more reason as to why its date is being pushed out.
Deadline is reporting that Edwards has now actually exited as director on the sequel. Apparently the split with Legendary Pictures has been completely amicable and was actually decided before the film’s date was set. Edwards is reportedly just looking to do some work on a more personal level with smaller projects, which is totally understandable after having to work on back-to-back blockbuster releases. It would make sense then that the studio felt they needed more time to get a director on board with the massive Godzilla 2, especially as they look to set it up for Godzilla vs Kong, which has a release date set for May 20, 2020.
I am personally a big fan of Edwards’ first Godzilla film and would’ve loved to see what he was going to do with the sequel. While a different director is not necessarily a bad thing for the film, it would likely mean a different style for the sequel which is a pity as I loved what Edwards had put together in the first film. The script has been written by Godzilla‘s Max Borenstein already, so the basic plan for the film should at least not change too much

I did not enjoy the 1st movie but Edwards direction was great. There were many night scenes that were easy to follow where so many movies sometimes just make it tough to follow the action *cough* Batman vs Superman *cough*
