With a name like La La Land, I was thinking this new movie could be the light-hearted sequel to Inception or a happy version of Nightmare on Elm Street. It seems instead though that the name is reserved instead for that of a musical, of all things. I guess the musical version of “La La” won out over the other loonier references.

Either way, musicals are a bit of a hit and miss in the modern movie world as few really succeed and most end up with a poor storyline that they try to compensate for with even worse musical numbers. La La Land however looks like it certainly has the potential to be one of the better ones and has a strong pedigree at its disposal.

Written and directed by Whiplash director Damien Chazelle, the film looks to combine strong story-telling to go along with its musical numbers. It also features the incredible cast of Ryan Gosling, Emma Stone and J.K. Simmons in the lead roles.

And while the musical number in the trailer doesn’t exactly excite me, the rest of this looks pretty good. What especially stands out for me is the bright cinematography and art direction. The film looks like it will have elaborate musical sequences and is certainly something different from what Chazelle has done in the past. I’m not a fan of musicals, but this is one to keep the eyes out for.

The full synopsis is below:

Written and directed by Academy Award nominee Chazelle (Whiplash), the film tells the story of Mia (Stone), an aspiring actress, and Sebastian (Gosling), a dedicated jazz musician, who are struggling to make ends meet in a city known for crushing hopes and breaking hearts. Set in modern day Los Angeles, this original musical about everyday life explores the joy and pain of pursuing your dreams.

La La Land is set to release in the US in December, which is right on course for potential Oscar nomination time. I haven’t heard a lot of buzz for the film of yet, but if it is any good, then it wouldn’t surprise me. Musicals are popular with the Oscars, even if not so much with the Box Office – or me.
