Kevin Feige talks GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY; reveals who the main villain is, character details and exactly when it takes place

I remember when I first started posting rumours that Marvel was going to be doing a Guardians of the Galaxy movie, and most of you non-hardcore comic book geeks greeted my fervour with the same look of  WTF-ness you give when you see a dog furiously drag its buttocks across the tarmac. A little over a  year and one brilliant Comic-Con panel later, and Guardians has become many people’s most anticipated film in the entire Marvel stable.

Which is great for me, as it means that when I now start talking about Marvel Studios head honcho Kevin Feige’s latest, rather major revelations about the film, then I don’t get that look again.

Guardians boasts a rather large cast of easily the most unique characters that Marvel has ever assembled for a film, and Feige (while speaking to Empire Magazine via CBM) gave a rundown of just who these so called “bunch of A-holes” are, and how they fit together.

“They are an unlikely band. It’s pure circumstance that brings them all together throughout the course of the movie. Rocket has been genetically and mechanically altered, he’s an experiment from one part of the galaxy. Groot is a species that happens to look like trees look, and is quite communicative if you can understand the different inflections in the way he says, “I am Groot.” Peter Quill left Earth in the mid ’80s, but when we meet back up with him he’s very much a citizen of the universe. Drax has one goal and one goal only, which is to kill Ronan because of a past tragedy. When we meet Gamora, she’s a bad guy working with Ronan and Nebula and Korath, and by extension for Thanos. Gamora doesn’t necessarily like doing that anymore, and tries to find a new path for herself. But she has a reputation as the deadliest woman in the galaxy [which means] that people aren’t greeting her with open arms.”

Whoa, whoa, whoa. Drax’s goal is to kill Ronan? In the comics, Drax’s human persona, Arthur Douglas, had his family killed by Thanos. Kronos, a sometime foe of Thanos, who was looking for a champion to battle the Mad Titan, took Douglas’ spirit and placed in a new powerful body, specifically created to able to kill Thanos and Drax the Destroyer was born. Now, I never expected them to honour all this backstory, as its just too much ground to cover, but seeing as how Thanos appears to be the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s big bad, I never thought they would change that aspect of the character.

But as Feige revealed further, there’s a very good reason for having Dave Bautista’s Drax’s focus be on Lee Pace’s Ronan the Accuser instead, as he is “very much the main bad guy”. So that makes Djimon Hounsou’s Korath and Karen Gillan’s Nebula his muscle, which makes a lot more sense. But where does that leave Thanos in the picture?

“…Thanos is lurking above it all. You will learn more about Thanos in Guardians, for sure. Certainly you’ll get more than the one turn around and smirk. You’ll get much more than that!”

There was a rumour flying around a while back that Guardians was actually taking place in the future, and that some time-travel mechanism would bring them into contact with the current crop of superheroes. But as is hinted by the earlier fact that Peter Quill left Earth in the 80’s when he was quite young and actor Chris Pratt, who plays the team’s leader, is only 34 years old, that would imply that Guardians is actually taking place at the same time as the current Phase 2 films, i.e. Iron Man 3, Thor: The Dark World and Captain America: The Winter Soldier.

“The general answer is yes… It’s not exactly revealed what year or month it is in relation to the other Phase Two films. But yes, it’s the same time.”

Great, so they’re taking place at the same time, but there’s kind of the whole “being on the other side of the universe” thing, so that means that Guardians can’t be all that connected to the events of the other films, right? Wrong.

“Certainly more [connected] than the others. We’ve already said that Thanos plays a part in it and is a character in it. That in and of itself should tell you it’s connected to the other worlds.”

We still need to see how Michael Rooker’s Yondu and Benecio Del Toro’s Collector fits into the whole story, but I have a feeling that both of them will have nothing more than extended cameos. Either way, I’m about as excited for this as a chihuahua on tik, so August 1, 2014 simply can’t come quick enough.
