This certainly has been the year of Kickstarter games, hasn’t it? Harnessing the power of Jean Claude Van Damme, numerous new titles have received a kick up, bringing to life ideas for games that most big name publishers would scoff at. Double Fine set a record earlier this year, with their Kickstarter game reaching a $3.3 million funding from fans. And now, Obsidian just surpassed that, setting a new precedent in the process.
The Obsidian entry, Project Eternity, was billed as a “party-based computer RPG set in a new fantasy world”, and needed $1.1 million in order to be created. Well the fans spoke with their wallets, and Project Eternity got $3.9 million in funding, thanks partly to the reputation of the deveoper, and people actually being willing to fork out cash for a game that they would want to play.
Who’da thunk it? Hopefully, with all that extra cash, Project Eternity can ship without a Fallout New Vegas level of bugs, something which Obsidian had a gltich-slapped hand in developing.
