We Analyzed Thousands of Coupon Codes to Find Out
If you’ve ever copied a promo code only to find it knocks a measly 5% off your cart, you’re not alone. Not all discount codes are created equal — and the difference between retailers can be pretty staggering.
The team at HotDeals dug into a large sample of active coupon codes across 20+ major shopping platforms to answer one simple question: which retailers are actually generous with their discounts, and which ones are just putting on a show?
Here’s what the data revealed.
How We Measured “Discount Generosity”
HotDeals is a verified coupon platform where real users test promo codes so shoppers don’t have to.
We extracted the percentage-based discount values from thousands of coupon titles across major retail, travel, entertainment, and lifestyle platforms.
For each brand, we calculated:
- Average discount rate
- Median discount (to account for outliers)
- Full discount range
Dollar-off coupons were excluded to keep comparisons like-for-like.
This isn’t a survey or a manufacturer’s claim — it’s drawn directly from real, circulating coupon codes.

Key Takeaways
1. Walgreens’ Photo Section Is a Hidden Goldmine
At an average of 63% off, Walgreens completely dominates this list — but with a catch.
Most high-value codes apply to photo products like canvas prints, acrylic blocks, magnets, and tile prints.
Everyday pharmacy or grocery items see much lower savings.
2. Fashion Tends to Be More Generous Than General Retail
- Urban Outfitters (48.8%)
- Torrid (36.5%)
- Belk (35.9%)
These outperform general marketplaces like Amazon and Temu.
Fashion retail benefits from higher margins and seasonal clearance cycles.
3. Amazon Codes Are More Conservative Than Expected
- Average: 19.4%
- Median: 15%
Many codes come from third-party sellers (often 5–10%), pulling down the average.
Big discounts (40%–60%) exist but are less common.
4. Temu’s “30% Off” Is the New Normal
- Median: 30%
- Most codes cluster at 30%
Higher discounts (like 90%) exist but are usually bundled promotions, not direct savings.
5. Travel Platforms Are the Least Generous
- Agoda: 7.5%
- Klook: 8.3%
- Priceline: 11.2%
Travel discounts are more tied to dynamic pricing and loyalty programs than promo codes.
6. Software & Subscription Discounts Are Event-Driven
RingCentral’s 46.7% average is mostly driven by:
- Conferences
- Partner deals
- Event-specific promotions
Standard consumer pricing discounts are usually lower.
What This Means for Shoppers
- Not all coupon fields guarantee real savings
- Travel platforms often have limited true promo codes
- Median discount is more reliable than average
- Fashion + department stores = best stacking opportunities
