In the last few years, every time Johhny Depp appeared on screen in some weird makeup and/or funny headgear (dead crow, anyone?) it usually resulted in some unintentional punchline at the expense of the actor’s street cred and box office pull. Nobody’s laughing now.
In the upcoming true-crime drama Black Mass, Depp plays notorious gangster Whitey Bulger, and despite him once again being decked out in more makeup than Darryn during a night on the town, this appears to be Depp at the very top of his game.
The incredibly first trailer for Black Mass set the scene for Depp’s scenery chewing performance perfectly, and now a new trailer has come along to remind us that not only does this latest film from Scott “Crazy Heart” Cooper boast a scene-stealing lead performance, but it also just looks damn good! And fun – or at least as much fun as watching a gangster grinding his instep into somebody’s face can be!
In 1970s South Boston, FBI Agent John Connolly (Joel Edgerton) persuades Irish mobster James “Whitey” Bulger (Johnny Depp) to collaborate with the FBI and eliminate a common enemy: the Italian mob. The drama tells the true story of this unholy alliance, which spiraled out of control, allowing Whitey to evade law enforcement, consolidate power, and become one of the most ruthless and powerful gangsters in Boston history.
And if that’s not enough to convince you, Black Mass’ crazy all-star cast also boasts Joel Edgerton, Dakota Johnson, Benedict Cumberbatch, Corey Stoll, Juno Temple, Kevin Bacon, Peter Saarsgard and Jesse Plemons. It is scheduled for release on September 18, 2015.
