Marvel at this epic trailer for Arjun, Disney's new Indian produced animated film

The House of Mouse recently acquired a large portion of Indian studio UTV, and now we get the trailer for the first product of that relationship, Arjun: Warrior Prince. And it looks incredible! But somehow I don’t think Mickey Mouse is going to be endorsing this one anytime soon. Last time I checked, that white-gloved rodent wasn’t a big fan of decapitations and disembowelment.

Now my Hindi may be a bit rusty, but I think what they’re saying is “Arjun is a natural born badass. He is a badass with a bow. He is a badass on horseback. And if you’re part of the random cannon fodder army that’s standing in his way, then he will use his whip sword to badass your face off.”

The striking art style seems to be a sort of CGI evolution of the 2D hand drawn stuff from Disney’s Prince of Egypt, while the battle sequences are definitely evoking a John Carter of Mars vibe. Neither of which are bad things, in my mind.

It’s currently set for release in India on May 25 2012, while there’s no international release as of yet. I have a feeling though that when it does get released worldwide, Disney might trim down on all the rolling heads and spilling entrails, before parents start picketing outside the Magic Kingdom. Because clearly, a little bit of historical violence is a lot more damaging to our children’s fragile psyches than the horror that is the “acting” on every show on the Disney Channel.

Synopsis:

“Based on the Indian Epic, the Mahabharat, which chronicles the heroic journey of a young prince from the days of his youthful innocence to his emergence as a valiant hero who single handedly took on an entire army in the battle for justice and peace.  It begins with Arjun as a nine-year-old boy and follows him till he grows into the warrior that the world knows him as. It explores his life with his brothers in Hastinapur, his training and education and his ultimate discovery of the warrior within himself.”
