So we’re going to have to wait a little longer for the release of Mortal Kombat thanks to Godzilla vs Kong currently kaiju-smashing its way through the pandemic-era box office records, prompting Warner Bros. to rather get out of its own way and hold back the bloody video game adaptation for an extra week. If that upsets you, well then WB may also have a little something to help with that as the studio dropped a brand new behind-the-scenes featurette for Mortal Kombat over the weekend and it’s really kool… Sorry, cool.

This new three-and-a-half-minute-long video features a ton of footage we haven’t seen before, including new fight scenes, fatalities, and locations as it introduces us the to cast playing these beloved characters. We hear from Lewis Tan, (playing original character Cole Young), Hiroyuki Sanada (Scorpion), Joe Taslim (Sub-Zero), Mehcad Brooks (Jax), Jessica McNamee (Sonya Blade), and more, including director Simon McQuoid and lifelong-fanboy-turned-screenwriter Greg Russo about their visions for these characters and how the story will stay true to the games. We also get our first proper looks at some other fan-favourite characters such as Kabal and Reptile and even one heart-stopping fatality. Check it out below!

The very R-rated and brutal Mortal Kombat also stars Ludi Lin as Liu Kang, Chin Han as Shang Tsung, Josh Lawson as Kano, Tadanobu Asano as Raiden, Elissa Cadwell as Nitara, and Sisi Stringer as Mileena. It is currently scheduled for release in theatres and on HBO Max on 23 April 2021.

In Mortal Kombat, MMA fighter Cole Young, accustomed to taking a beating for money, is unaware of his heritage—or why Outworld’s Emperor Shang Tsung has sent his best warrior, Sub-Zero, an otherworldly Cryomancer, to hunt Cole down. Fearing for his family’s safety, Cole goes in search of Sonya Blade at the direction of Jax, a Special Forces Major who bears the same strange dragon marking Cole was born with. Soon, he finds himself at the temple of Lord Raiden, an Elder God and the protector of Earthrealm, who grants sanctuary to those who bear the mark. Here, Cole trains with experienced warriors Liu Kang, Kung Lao and rogue mercenary Kano, as he prepares to stand with Earth’s greatest champions against the enemies of Outworld in a high stakes battle for the universe. But will Cole be pushed hard enough to unlock his arcana—the immense power from within his soul—in time to save not only his family, but to stop Outworld once and for all?
