It’s been 14 years since Owen Wilson decided to break from his comedy mold and do the whole action-man thing in the middling Behind Enemy Lines, and he’s spent the years since essentially going back to his Owen Wilson-ness and just saying “Wow” a lot. But now Derek Zoolander’s male modelling nemesis is back in new action thriller No Escape and I’ll be damned if it doesn’t look half-bad.
A tense new trailer for the flick is out and proud to advertise that this movie is from the “creators of Whiplash and Nightcrawler“. Before you get too excited thinking that means that acclaimed directors Damien Kurzel or Dan Gilroy are behind this, they’re actually just referring to it coming from the same production house.
The real man behind this movie is director/co-writer John Erick Dowdle who may not exactly have the high profile of those previously mentioned filmmakers, but did give us the surprisingly great remake Quarantine (the English-language version of Rec). He appears to be leveraging the same white-knuckle suspense that he cultivated in Quarantine here, only this time the terror is far more real-world.
In their new overseas home in Southeast Asia, an American family soon finds themselves caught in the middle of a coup, as they frantically look for a safe escape in an environment where foreigners are being immediately executed.
No Escape also stars Lake Bell, Pierce Brosnan, Sterling Jerins and Claire Geare. It is scheduled for release on 2 September.
