To paraphrase a certain arrow-shooting vigilante: I have failed this movie blog. It’s sort of my job to keep you guys informed of all the major movies and yet yesterday was the very first time I had ever even heard of The Big Short.
You would definitely not think that to be the case for a true life drama surrounding the 2005 US housing financial crisis which stars Christian Bale, Steve Carell, Brad Pitt and Ryan Gosling. Oh and did I mention Adam McKay (Anchorman, Step Brothers, The Other Guys) is directing and also co-wrote the script which is based on the book from the guy who wrote Moneyball and The Blind Side?
Yeah, that is a serious amount of talent and potential to have somehow snuck in under my radar. To be fair though, it’s not totally the fault of my oversight. The film had already quietly wrapped production earlier in the year, but had then not shown up on any of Paramount’s release schedules. That suddenly changed yesterday when it suddenly got dated for the end of the year – right in time for Oscar contention, obviously. And to mark the occasion, they have now also released this pretty great trailer which shows McKay, normally known for his pure comedy work, doing a fine job of balancing real world drama with some levity.
Check it out below.
The Big Short is scheduled for release internationally on 23 December 2015.
