Last year, Beenox Interactive gave us Spider-man : Shattered Dimensions, a genre and universe hopping game featuring the Spider…men from four different universes; Amazing Spider-man. Spider-man Noir, Spider-man 2099 and a symbiote-bonded Ultimate Spider-man. It was a fun, enjoyable romp -  but  felt more like 4 different Spidey mini-games played in a loop. There’s a new one on the way, and it too features more than just one Spider-man.

Spider-Man : Edge of Time will have the amazing Spider-man crossing continuities once again, this time only with the possible Spider-man of the future, 2099. It seems just one Spider-man isn’t enough to Activision and Beenox.

“At Beenox, we are constantly listening to the fans and looking for new and creative ways to innovate the gameplay experience for them,” said , Beenox’s Dee Brown in a press release. “We want to create a totally distinct experience in Spider-Man: Edge of Time by working with Peter David on the story and creating this urgent, high-stakes experience where time is working against you and the fate of Spider-Man hangs in the balance.” The multiple award winning Peter David is one of the co-creators of the Spider-man 2099 series; and has had an impressive career in comic books since 1985, including a 12 year run doing the Incredible Hulk.

The story seems awfully convoluted; The death of Peter Parker in the Amazing timeline causes a terrible future for Spider-Man 2099 and you’re tasked with fixing it, by jumping back and forth between the continuities,  resolving issues and exploring the the cause and effect of mucking about with time. With Peter David’s pedigree, I’m filled with optimism that we’ll be getting a great Spider-man story, but it’s up to Beenox to make it play right. I think they tried to cram too much in to Shattered Dimensions, and with the somewhat narrow focus this time around, they might just nail it.

Editor. I'm old, grumpy and more than just a little cynical. One day, I found myself in possession of a NES, and a copy of Super Mario Bros 3. It was that game that made me realise that games were more than just toys to idly while away time - they were capable of being masterpieces. I'm here now, looking for more of those masterpieces.
