Latest Xbox Live Results – Gears Moving up again?

The latest Xbox live results are staying fairly similar, with COD4 and Halo 3 leading the pack, but the interesting thing is that Gears Of War has made it back into the top 3.

The reason I find this so interesting is that I have been seeing similar results amongst gamers here in South Africa. While Gears of War had dropped off of the popularity list significantly since the release of Halo 3 and Call of Duty 4, there has been a huge increase in local gamers playing good ol’ Gears again.

With Gears of War 2 coming later this year, we have to ask, is this an international coincidence? Or are we seeing the power of the hype machine in full force? Never underestimate the power of hype.

  1. Wait till Battlefield: Bad Company comes out and then you’ll start to see a change.

    question lazy. is this based on amount of players playing game or just presence? i see oblivion in number 10 spot and unless something drastic has happened its only single player. gears of war has gone classic. could the influx of new buyers on the single player campaign (while connected to live make a difference?) just a thought. but i do agree that gears has always had a constant presence on my friends list.

    I am not 100% sure to be honest.

    I think it counts the number of Xbox’s connected to Live playing that game…

    I think there is a huge drop between the top 4 and everything else though… Oblivion always seems to hang about on that list.

    @Syph1n

    I think it is basically taken as Games being played while the user is connected to live, hence oblivion being in the number 10 spot. It is obvious though , that multiplayer gaming will generate the most time played as in games like gears and COD there is only so much of the single player that you can play before moving on to multiplayer. Interesting though how Oblivion is on that list, but multiplayer games like Frontlines and Team Fortress 2 are nowhere to be seen.

    I maintain CoD4 is just there from the Xmas bubble. Not to say it’s not a good game, but it’s 1 dimensional and as soon as another innovative modern combat shooter lands it’ll fall off the chart. Something like BF:BC…

    Gears is just special 😉

    Its true though Doobi, Ive had countless people on Live tell me that no matter what you play, you always go back to Gears. Played Halo 3, then everyone went back, play COD4 went back, played TF2, went back, Burnout, went back.

    There is something different about it, i dont think anyone knows what it is though, even Epic, I think they got lucky to be honest.
