It’s definitely been the year for threequels – at least for big name shooters. Nearly every nominee on our list of the year’s best shooters has got a 3 on the end of it. There may not have been much in the way of innovation – but that doesn’t mean there’s no fun to be had. Which shooter gave us the most pew-pew-pewing satisfaction this year?
Here are the nominees for best shooter:
Battlefield 3
Modern Warfare 3
Crysis 2
Gears of War 3
Resistance 3
Killzone 3
And the award goes to:

Winner: Gears of War 3
Epic’s taken the series’ tried-and-tested mechanics, tightened and refined them until they’re almost faultless – and gave us an absorbing, compelling (and slightly cheesy) co-op campaign, a (mostly) balanced multiplayer element and a reworked Horde Mode rounded out a complete package.
Runner-Up: Modern Warfare 3
