Comic books are big money these days, but not because they’re one of the few printed mediums around that can still turn a profit. Thanks to blockbuster films based on those properties, they’re able to be more than just 24 pages of costumed shenanigans on a monthly basis. And with the Batman Arkham series proving this point in video game form, expect more characters to make that leap soon.
Speaking at a conference that Yahoo! Finance made a transcript of, Time Warner CEO Kevin Tsujihara spoke about how video games were going to be playing a bigger role in the future of that company. Which won’t be just Lego games, according to his speech:
We are by far the biggest – probably the only studio that’s making money on the game side like this. It’s a business that we’ve built from scratch with some acquisition but we have really three key franchises to date.
It’s the local franchise, it’s the Mortal Kombat franchise, and it’s the Arkham of Batman franchise, those three are very significant. We are having a very good year. We have two more big games coming out, LEGO Marvel coming out as well as the next installation of the Batman Arkham series coming out in October as well.
From there, expect the big bad bat to have some more company soon:
But we are on track to having a great year in games and we feel very good about where that’s going. And as you said it’s being driven – the new franchises that we are going to be zoning are going to be DC franchises. We think there is big opportunities to build off of what we are doing throughout the rest of the company in games as well.
Warner Bros is in a good position here. Mortal Kombat, Batman and Lego games are solid earners, and most importanly, quality games that encourage people to take a gamble with them. Personally, I’d love to see a proper Man of Steel video game, and I’d bet easy money that the next such game to feature Superman will be a tie-in companion to the upcoming 2015 film Batman vs Superman.
That’s a concept that deserves a large-scale game. And it would sure as hell be better than an Aquaman video game.
On the other hand though…

I agree. I don’t think they’ve ever made a decent Man of Steel game but I suppose that’s because he’s a god and you can’t keep facing the same bad guy who is also a god, yadda yadda.

I’d probably spend most of my time flying through buildings and beating up the normal criminals to make me feel invincible.

Here’s an Idea. A Video game where you play a super villain bent on on world domination. A game where you take up the role of Thanos,Magneto,Darkseid or Apocalypse. Enough with this goody two shoes bullshit.

A Superman game similar to inFamous. You play an unknown Kryptonian who crashes on Earth as a child, and makes the same karmic choices which will make you good or evil. You can call it “Son of Krypton”.

Should they make a dedicated Superman game, let’s hope it beats the heck out of Superman 64 from the N64… Otherwise AVGN might have something to say about it. 🙂
On a personal note, I’d love some more superhero games in the vein of the Arkham series… They have a ton of great names to choose from!
