The Vita is actually selling out…in North America

Sony’s PlayStation Vita hasn’t been doing well, and even Sony’s relegated it to being a bit of a Portstation and handheld indie gaming device. The thing works better as a PS4 extender than a handheld. The tide though, is turning. Spurred on by the release of the newer, slimmer and more importantly cheaper PlayStation Vita, the thing has started selling like the proverbial hotcake. In fact, Sony’s struggling to keep up with demand.

“We’re seeing healthy consumer demand for PS Vita globally, particularly in markets like Japan,”a Sony rep has told Polygon.

“The U.S. launch of the slimmer and lighter PS Vita has generated strong interest among gamers, and we’re working to replenish supply here to ensure continued momentum leading into the holidays.”

The new, slimmer Vita was launched alongside the mobile version of Borderlands 2, which happens to be a pretty damned poor port, with a terrible frame rate. Still, it’s nice to see the Vita doing ok. I do have a soft-spot for the hardware, but the majority of games available for the thing appeal only to those with plaid shirts, vintage skinny jeans and waxed moustaches and those whose TV entertainment is largely comprised of animated tentacles entering places that no tentacles should go.

If you’re wondering why the slimmer Vita hasn’t hit our shores, you can blame our economy. When the original Vita was released, our economy was actually doing ok… but it went downhill shortly afterwards. Bringing in stock of the “cheaper” Vita with our current exchange means the system actually ends up being slightly more expensive than the original stock.

It really is a cool device, And that fact that it streams PS4 games just blows my mind every time. Has to be some sort of Japanese black magic

According to Wikipedia we are the second largest economy in Africa behind Nigeria. How sad is that? What’s even more sad is that there now exists a term “strike season”

Yeah man. I think Nigeria overtook us this year. Even with all the internal issues. That being said, their population is about 5 times that of ours. Look at China, India etc, large population can often lead to better GDP. Again that being said, they don’t have strike season, something that is crippling our economy.

Their Oil does help a lot, but if they started investing in industry they would blow SA out the water.

I seriously doubt that you will get any change until the next generation. I believe the ANC is still judged over the lifetime of the parents of the voters. Overthrowing fascist regime outweighs last 20 years. And it has actually only since Mbeki took over that any serious grumblings were heard. Remember that the very poor and destitute are not worse off than under the old government, who still gets the blame for their situation (maybe rightly so).

The international ratings agencies have given the SA government an ultimatum to sort out their economic policies. The government retorted with a typical arrogant answer, which was subsequently heavily criticized by official ANC channels. Which is hopefully a step to the party starting to hold its own accountable.

Of course the cynic in me is saying it is just happening because someone in the ANC realises that if the economy goes to shit the amounts they have squirreled away is worth less.

Yip, love the fact that the unions are paid to negotiate better livelihood for their members and they do this negotiation by sending the workers home without pay so that their families have no food. Strike should be a last course of action against truly oppressive conditions not the first action to demand an extra quarter percent.

Me thinks its more of a supply demand thing that SONY is clearing stock on order to bundle the handheld with the PS4 or Borderlands game.
