Playgrounds, at face value, might seem like simple ways for kids to pass the time. Maybe you see them as places for young people to burn off energy between sitting in class and sitting on screens at home. And sure, they can be those things. But they’re also major contributors to communities, adding revenue to local businesses and increasing property values. Here’s why municipalities are increasing their investments in commercial playgrounds:

Urban Areas Demand Access to Healthy Resources

For decades, inner cities have been recognized as virtual wastelands of healthy resources. Entire neighborhoods may lack a place to buy fresh produce, meat, and eggs. They often won’t have an abundance of nature, like trees, grassy fields, or running creeks and streams. Many don’t even have libraries for kids to spend time learning to read and practicing their computer skills. Playgrounds, if they’re present, are typically run-down, broken, and hotbeds for criminal activity.  

This reality has changed in recent years as more people have moved into those urban areas and begun demanding better resources. Now, you’ll find farmers’ markets, urban gardens, and health clinics where they didn’t exist before. To take this logic even further, families in general will cause property values to rise and improve the quality of a neighborhood. This is because most parents care deeply about the place where they’re raising their children. Engaged families can motivate entire neighborhoods to vote, get involved, and help make changes happen. Speaking of spending money, great commercial playgrounds help boost revenues for local businesses, too. Often, businesses fail simply because they don’t market themselves well enough, so not enough people know about them. They never get a chance to prove their value to their community because of their location. And if you know anything about real estate and business, location is everything. 

With a mixed-use lot located near a playground, in a walkable environment, you almost instantly increase the foot traffic near local businesses. Even friendly neighbors in their cars are more likely to see a business near a playground they’re visiting. Moms may make playdates and stop at a local coffee shop. Teenagers might stop at the record store on the corner. And small produce markets can sell their wares to pedestrians carrying canvas bags to and from the park. Create an environment centered around a playground, and you can improve the state of business in your city.  

Commercial Playgrounds Become Community Hubs

Here’s the reality that many still don’t realize, but municipalities are quickly becoming aware of: parks and playgrounds are community hubs. Young adults gather to play disc golf, parents take kids for playdates, and senior citizens walk nice nature trails around the swings and slides. The community hubs help people see each other as neighbors, friends, and people worth fighting for. This sense of community encourages people to be more active, spend more money locally, and stay in their homes for longer. 

It doesn’t take much, either. A great structure, a set of swings, a few climbing options, and lots of green and colorful plants with space to run and play can make for an amazing park on a small lot. Add a water feature, a sand box, and covered picnic tables, and you’re offering your neighborhood the whole package. You can essentially attract people from all walks of life to meet, spend time, relax, and get to know each other. If there’s anything that’s good for a city, it’s this sense of community. 

In the end, cities are quickly understanding the connection between shared spaces and thriving communities. Where sprawl once meant disconnection and more money spent on gas to get from home to market, you’ll now see more mixed-use lots with markets and playgrounds in housing communities. The suburbs got lonely for a while, but more people are helping ensure everyone can get out, play, and enjoy time in a local park or playground.
