If any console has had a truly blockbuster year, it has to be the Wii U. You look at the games released this year on that device, and Nintendo was batting for a six all the way, klapping hit after hit out of the park. Super Smash Bros brings the Nintendo 2014 release schedule to a close essentially. And that game is ending the year with a bang.
Destructoid – 95/100
Super Smash Bros. for Wii U delivers all of the rock-solid mechanics that the 3DS version gave us, with the joy of playing on a big screen with friends and a heap of worthwhile modes. It certainly doesn’t negate the greatness of the 3DS edition, but for those who have a bunch of friends anxious to Smash and can only get one, this is the version to get.
EGM – 95/100
Super Smash Bros. for Wii U offers the most modes, fighters, and stages in the history of the franchise, with a surprisingly high level of polish across the board. Whether you prefer multiplayer or toughing it out against CPU fighters, you’ll find hours of excellent fun throwing down with your favorite Nintendo characters.
CVG – 9/10
For now, though, we’ll need to settle for what is ‘merely’ the best Smash Bros game to date: the ultimate love letter to all things Nintendo and one that, despite potentially being held back by its handheld sibling, still provides the sort of local multiplayer that will have friends talking about memories and moments years later.
US Gamer – 4.5/5
As a tribute to all things Nintendo, Super Smash Bros. can hardly be topped. The attention to detail afforded to its characters is matched only by the comprehensive nature of its soundtrack and stage selection. On top of that, the Wii U brings with it a huge amount of single-player and multiplayer content, putting it a notch above its similarly strong handheld counterpart. Running through Classic Mode and the like to unlock characters can be the tiniest bit tedious, and the Amiibos don’t stand out as a particularly worthy addition, but there’s otherwise very little to complain about in this excellent high-definition update of Nintendo’s much-loved mash-up.
Hardcore Gamer – 4.5/5
There was little doubt Nintendo would deliver its absolute best with Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, but somehow the Japanese company has managed to blow past the expectations for a title of this magnitude. Gorgeous, addictive and absolutely exploding with content, this is the ultimate Super Smash Bros. experience. Though the stage design tool is once again lacking and Smash Tour will be hit or miss for some, you’ll still be playing this for years to come. Super Smash Bros. for Wii U is a perfect poster child for the charm, polish and pedigree Nintendo is known and adored for, and should be celebrated as such.
Super Smash Bros is out later this month, and stars a variety of Nintendo characters as they battle to smack one another around. It also stars Sonic the Hedgehog, who gets to be in at least one good game this year.
