First reactions to Star Wars: The Last Jedi praise it as a “mind-blowing,” “grand slam home run”

At the time of writing this, it is exactly 2 days, 7 hours, 51 minutes and 50 seconds until I get to watch Star Wars: The Last Jedi. After this latest bit of news, that’s 2 days, 7 hours, 51 minutes and 50 seconds too long. We’ve been hearing for a while now that writer/director Rian Johnson had done something special with this middle chapter of the new Star Wars trilogy. JJ Abrams’ The Force Awakens was great but it relied a tad bit too much on nostalgia. In contrast, The Last Jedi allowed Johnson to tell a tale completely unfettered by having to hit familiar sights and sounds to lure in old fans again after the disappointment of the Prequel Trilogy, and he reportedly did it all so smoothly and without issue that it blew away the folks at Lucasfilm enough to give him his own Star Wars trilogy.

Last night though, the hotly anticipated blockbuster’s premiere happened in Los Angeles, and people other than just a handful of Lucasfilm bigwigs finally got to see it. So was studio boss Kathleen Kennedy right in all the praise she’s heaped on Johnson, or was it just hyperbole? According to the first social media reactions that hit the web straight after the premiere, it’s most definitely the former as press have just been flabbergasted by how amazing The Last Jedi is, with many proclaiming it one of the best (if not the best) Star Wars movie ever. Everything from the directing to writing to cast to action set pieces are just getting glowing reviews all around, which means that I’m really upset that it’s not Tuesday at 5pm yet! Where’s a damned time machine when you need it?!

SLIGHT UPDATE: Since the time of writing this, there have many, many more responses popping up out there, but thus far they’re almost universally the same level of awe and praise. There are a couple of other points that have been mentioned though, which THR’s Andy Lewis sums up nicely.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi stars Daisy Ridley, Mark Hamill, Adam Driver, Carrie Fisher, John Boyega, Kelly Marie Tran, Oscar Isaac, Laura Dern, Benicio del Toro, Gwendoline Christie, and Andy Serkis. It is officially scheduled for release this coming Friday, 15 December, but there will be some early screenings on Thursday evening (I’ll be at IMAX in CapeGate so say “Hi!” if you see me. I’ll be the giant coloured guy in the Star Wars shirt having a seizure in anticipation).

I’m so damn relieved that I’m watching this tomorrow already. I don’t think I have the energy for all the internet gymnastics needed to avoid spoilers.
