After raking in a fortune at the box office and proving to be a generally favourable hit with critics, it shouldn’t be any surprise that the intrepid young explorer and his faithful canine will be returning to the big screen.
Only this time, it’s not Steven Spielberg that will be directing, but rather fellow collaborator Peter Jackson instead.
Jackson will helm the next Tintin adventure, although its still undecided yet on which of the original books the sequel will take inspiration from. Jackson, who is currently busy putting together The Hobbit in a two part epic adaptation of the JRR Tolkien novel, says that the plan was always for the film-makers to each have a turn at directing a Tintin feature, as part of a larger trilogy.
“Peter’s doing it,” said Steven Spielberg to the Guardian. “I wanted to do it, but Peter has to because we made a deal. I said, ‘I’ll direct the first one, you direct the second one.’
“And Peter, of course, is going to do it right after he finishes photography on The Hobbit. He’ll go right into the 31, 21 days of performance capture.”
While Spielberg is also tight-lipped on which source material will be used, producer Kathleen Kennedy thinks that the 1956 Calculus Affair might lay the groundwork for the sequel.
“We’re not telling the world what books we’re basing the second movie on yet,” Spielberg said. “We haven’t decided that yet. She’s throwing a monkey wrench into your story! It could be that. I like The Calculus Affair. So it could be.”
“We have completed a story outline now. We have a writer on it. I’m just not declaring what it is. It will be more than one book, but no more than two.”
The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn, proved to be a smash hit for Spielberg and his first ever turn at actually directing an animated film instead of producing for once.
The film has already won a golden globe for best animated film, but was strangely ignored when it came to announcing the nominees for the Oscars.

Cool, though not really news. They signalled that intent before even starting the first film. The real question is who will do the third – as far as I can remember, the intent is to make a trilogy, though unrelated – ala Indiana Jones
I hope they adapt the storyline arch Seven Crystal Balls and Prisoners Of the Sun, though I am perfectly fine with a completely new adventure. the world needs more Tintin.
