Writer Simon Kinberg speaks X-Men First Class sequel: Focus is on Magneto

Where the hell did Michael Fassbender come from? Just a few years ago, he was a complete nobody and now he is an acting powerhouse able to elevate pretty much every film he plays in. Now X-Men: First Class’ already amazing script and cast may not have needed that elevation, but he did it anyway (what a swell guy, hey?) with his… magnetic performance as Erik Lehnsherr. (Sorry, I couldn’t resist.)

(Ok that was the last bad pun, I promise.)

Simon Kinberg, the scribe for First Class’ yet unnamed sequel recently spoke to MTV and he revealed that we’ll be seeing a whole lot more from the master of magnetism.

Kinberg  began by saying:

“I’m a huge X-Men fan. I grew up loving the comic books and it was really exciting to be able to do the origin story of Xavier and Magneto, and getting those two actors, [James] McAvoy and [Michael] Fassbender, were really amazing. So being able to explore those characters with actors of that quality will be exciting a second time around, and doing some things unexpected with those characters, which is the plan.”

When Magnet is mentione he responded with:

“That’s what was so cool about the first one and what we want to continue. Magneto becomes the villain ultimately of the franchise but he’s a much more complicated character as a young man. He’s someone you sympathize with, you care about, you root for even though might not necessarily agree with his methods, you understand his philosophy.”

With regards to the approach they will be taking with developing the character i.e. slowly building him up to arch-villain status or having him go full on monomaniacal from the get-go:

“We’re still figuring that out. I think the truth is ultimately that because Michael [Fassbender] is such an interesting actor, he’ll never be full-on anything. He’ll have a villainous side and he’ll have a sympathetic human side you’ll be able to relate but you’ll also be afraid of him. He becomes Magneto, he says ‘Call me Magneto’ at the end of the first movie.”

Personally, even though it may be far more overt than what they may be intending, I’d absolutely love for them to use an idea that director Matthew Vaughn had for a sequel before the first film was even released:

“I’ve got some ideas for the opening for the next film. I thought it would be fun to open with the Kennedy Assassination, and we reveal that the magic bullet was controlled by Magneto. That would explain the physics of it, and we see that he’s pissed off because Kennedy took all the credit for saving the world [during the Cuban Missile Crisis] and mutants weren’t even mentioned.”

Magneto as the man on the grassy knoll, taking revenge for what happened during the Cuban Missile Crisis? Just tell me who to give my money to to make that happen.

Well he was the only redeeming thing in an otherwise very average Centurion. His turn in Jane Eyre was also a cut above the rest.
And although overshadowed by Christopher Waltz’s scenery chewing in Inglourious Basterds, every scene he was in was just quality.
