The Avengers gets a new name…In the UK at least

It may only be two months away from release, but that doesn’t mean that the big screen adaptation of the Avengers film, which sees various Marvel comic heroes join forces, isn’t in need of some quick ninja-style editing.

While rabid UK fans are no doubt expecting to see a Joss Whedon directed blockbuster flick called The Avengers, it’s had a slightly longer name tacked onto it, and there’s a very good, Sean Connery related reason why.

Now called Marvel Avengers Assemble, the new name has a spiffy new poster to go with it, all to avoid some confusion related to a campy 1960s TV show and god-awful movie adaptation.

Flashback a few decades ago, and British audiences were enthralled by the adventures of Emma Peel and John Steed, as they went up against all manner of lunacy while protecting the British Empire.

Flash forward a few more decades, but hang back a little so that you arrive in 1998, and British audiences were vomiting in cinema aisles as a kilted Sean Connery explained how he was going to use a weather “devische” to rule the world, while Uma Thurman made a futile attempt to pass herself off as a British secret Agent.

Name changes aside, the new adventures of Captain America, The Hulk, Iron Man, Thor, Nick Fury, Black Widow and Hawkeye are still locked in for their April 26 launch, just in time to teach Tom “Loki’s got your war horse” Hiddleston a thing or two about team work.

Although if Sean Connery had to make a cameo as a cosmic level villain with a passion for earth kilts, I’d still watch that film. Twice.

Are people really that thick? Surely the heavy promoting that Im sure will happen for this film will mean that in no way it could be mistaken for the other version of the avengers. I know it doesnt happen that often but it really annoys me when films names have to be changed by a stupid marketting department ! They could have even called it Marvels the Avengers if it is really that tricky!
