Michael Bay says the new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are aliens. We all go "WTF?"

We’ve been hearing a lot about the proposed reboot of those heroes on the half shell lately. First there was news that Battle: LA and Wrath of the Titans director Jonathan Liebesman will be taking the helm, and then we learned that film is scheduled for a Christmas Day 2013 release.

But the latest bit of news is a doozy. Massive explosions virtuoso, Michael Bay, took time out of his busy scheduling of copying his own movies, to speak about the new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles live-action film (which he is producing) at the Nickelodeon Upfront convention this weekend, and what he has to say about the Turtles are sure to upset a few fans.

Wait, what? Aliens? But then why are they still called Teenage MUTANT Ninja Turtles? Are they mutant aliens now? Did the other aliens force them to live in the sewers? Is there an alien giant talking rodent?
And despite the fact Mr Baysplosion himself is only producing, I can’t help but feel that he may be behind this crazy development. These type of heavy on nonsense light on logic plot elements (Transformers, come on down!) is completely his style, and will end up doing nothing more than pissing off the established fan base.
As luck would have it, a friend of mine, Francois, is a member of that established fan base, and he had this to say about the news:
“Never thought I would agree with Uwe Boll, but f$%k Michael Bay.”
Well said, Francois. Well said.

Look, when he ruined Transformers it didn’t bother me so much as I missed the whole Transformer thing (only knew Beast Wars). But I swear there will be hell to pay if he screws up TMNT.

I dunno how many of you saw the extras that came with the Transformers DVD.  In it, Michael Bay himself said when the designs for Megatron got leaked, the reaction to it was not favorable.  He then changed it to the current Megatron we saw in the movies.
So, hopefully he will soon realize the error of his ways with the alien schtick.
As far as him ruining Transformers, look I have to disagree.  I thought he did a great job in bringing a kids toy line to the big screen.  And as anyone who did not grow up with an Xbox. Playstation or PC would know, big explosions and kinda flimsy plot lines is what makes up a kids make belief sessions, whether he was playing with his action figures indoors or his guns outside…
Look, Bay got my respect with one move:  He had the balls to cast Peter Cullen as Optimus Prime.  For those who don’t know, he was the voice behind Prime in the 80’s cartoon as well as the movies.
When Prime uttered “Autobots, recon!” and “Autobots, move out!” I swear I was a kid again.

I’ll never say that MIchael Bay ruined Transformers. I mean, lets face it, it wasn’t exactly a high brow concept to begin with. What upset a lot of fans, myself included, was that we went to see a Transformers movie, not a frantic Shia Lebeouf can’t find a job while his parents consume drugs movie.

I enjoyed the first Transformers, I really did. Because it seemed like Bay had somehow managed to rein in all his usual “bay-isms” but with the subsequent sequels though, he was back to being the hack director that he is.

The second Transformers… the lesser said about that one the better in all honesty.  But the third, whilst not as great as the first was enjoyable for most of it.
As far as Shia is concerned, he wasn’t the worst of the lot, and I think Bay could have gone far worse than him.
I wouldn’t go as far as calling Bay a hack director though.  Personally I enjoyed his movies.  If you really want to talk hack, talk about the above mentioned Uwe Boll.
His Bloodrayne was enough to put me of his movies for good.

Yeah, look, to be fair, I never had the problem with Shia himself that a lot of people did. He did what he was asked to. I had problem with all the unnecessary unfunny rubbish about Sam Witwicky’s life that we had to sit through, went all we wanted to see was Optimus Prime being a badass.
T3 had badass Optimus in spades, but pretty much every scene in that film where a human was involved was painful to sit through. And, wrt to Michael Bay, I’m sorry but he is a hack. He’s certainly not devoid of talent, but he is a hack for being one of the laziest directors in Hollywood. He uses the exact same shots/scenes in pretty much every single film he makes, and has even gone so far as to take footage of whole scenes from his older films, add some new cgi elements and then splicing them in his new movies.

Uwe Boll might make horrible movies coz he doesn’t know any better (and is possibly crazy) but Michael Bay does this stuff intentionally.

I’ll always love Bad Boys 1 and The Rock, as he had not devolved into his excesses yet, but since then he has done nothing but increase my ire with every movie.

Meh… look, I cannot comment on the creative genius of Michael Bay.  I guess that is one downside you guys have of being critics.

You always watch a movie with a critical eye.  (I may be wrong though.)  Me, I tend to put my mind in neutral when I walk into a cinema.  I spend my whole day having to concentrate and analyze data and having to explain why an app does what it does…

So the last thing I want to do is sit there and comment on the symbolic meaning of Bumblebee’s inability to speak and so on and so forth.  And I guess that is what Michael Bay does best.  He gives you a movie where you just go along for the ride, that is if you are willing to switch of your inner critic for a while.

I do not think there are any chances of him doing the remake of Driving Miss Daisy, for example. Arthouse is not a genre I will equate with Michael Bay, and I think he knows that as well.

And as long as he does not rape my childhood the same way Sam Raimi did with Spiderman 3, he will be an okay director.

Guess that is one of the advantages of growing up in the 80’s, living of (mostly) cheesy actioners like Invasion USA…

Michael Bay is absolutely a hack. I’ll say this: the stories in his films are lacking. One on your main strengths as a director always has to be story but with Bay, it’s his weakest. His films looks great though, which tells you that he might be a better Director of Photography than an actual director.

But his ego won’t allow that.

Oh, The Rock and Bad Boys, you say. Well, bear in mind that both those films (the best in his filmography, mind) were both made at an early stage in his film career, well before his box office success and before he had much clout.

But, now that he is one of the most successfull directors in history, he has clout in spades and can call the shots as he sees fit. Nobody can give him shit, and because he’s such a poor judge of performance and story, he doesn’t know how to properly tell a good story. But nobody’s gonna say shit. Because he’s Michael Bay.

The worst thing to ever happen to Michael Bay’s career was success.

I want him to do the Bravestarr live action movie. It’s already cheesy and full of good/evil themes and lots of explosions, not to mention a cyborg horse. You’d think Bay would be all over that…

@twitter-230562949:disqus Somebody did give him shit: Megan Fox, who compared his on-set behaviour to all around nice guy and winner of the Berlin Best Moustache Competition for 10 yrs running: Adolf Hitler.

She then promptly had her toe-thumbed ass fired from Transformers 3 and replaced with a skinny 5’10” claymation puppet.

True, but let’s face it, in the great sphere of things, Megan Fox aint no great shakes. I’d like it if someone with REAL clout would give him shit. A Spielberg or a Zemekis or a Bruckheimer.

Obviously, the one thing deterring anyone from telling Bay that his films are shit is that fact that his films bring in bucketloads of money and for an industry seeing losses due to increasing reasons, when someone is able to make films that bring in money, it’s hard to fault them otherwise.

I’m not saying that any of these people have sold out. Far from it. Filmmaking is expensive and needs to make it’s money back somehow. If there weren’t films out there making money, there industry wouldn’t be able to sustain itself and a lot of people would be out of work.

Kudos to Bay for making films that bring in money and keep people going to the cinemas.

And it pains me to admit that audiences are as much to blame for the shit Bay produces as Bay is.

Yeah, it’s like with Robert Rodriguez and the Spy Kids films. They’re crap, and Rodriguez knows that they’re crap, but he keeps making them because with the money they bring in, he can afford to make his own indie films.
