With so many massive blockbusters being released in 2012, and their respective marketing campaigns bombarding your senses around every corner, it’s only natural that some movies will slip between the cracks. Which is probably why up until 2 hours ago, I had never even heard of Red Lights, the new psychological thriller from Spanish director Rodrigo Cortes, the guy who became famous in 2010 for sticking Ryan Reynolds in a box in Buried.
This time around he has Cillian Murphy and Sigourney Weaving dropped into a world where everything is not as it seems, as their investigation and debunking of celebrity psychics leads them to creepy Robert De Niro. Which, as you can see by this trailer, turns out to be not such a great turn of events. Especially if you’re made out of glass.
The film was apparently shown at Sundance earlier in the year, and the buzz was that (despite the generic supernatural thriller approach taken by the trailer) it has an unconventional structure and narrative which may put off some viewers, but also boasts exceptional performances from it’s cast. This last bit is obviously not surprising when you’re talking about Sigourney Weaver, Cillian Murphy, Toby Jones, Robert De Niro and rapidly rising star, Elizabeth Olsen.
Personally, I love some unconventionality in my movies, and with a cast that’s worth the price of admission alone, I will definitely be looking forward to Red Lights when it eventually releases. Unfortunately, with no international release date in place yet, there’s no idea when that might happen.
Here’s the synopsis:
Two investigators of paranormal hoaxes, the veteran Dr. Margaret Matheson and her young assistant, Tom Buckley, study the most varied metaphysical phenomena with the aim of proving their fraudulent origins. Simon Silver, a legendary blind psychic, reappears after an enigmatic absence of 30 years to become the greatest international challenge to both orthodox science and professional sceptics. Tom starts to develop an intense obsession with Silver, whose magnetism becomes stronger with each new manifestation of inexplicable events. As Tom gets closer to Silver, tension mounts, and his worldview is threatened to its core.
