I’m sure all of us have had recurring nightmares about a girl with her head on the wrong way, crawling down the stairs on all fours, backwards, projectile vomiting all over the place. (What… just me?)

Well the architect of that horrid dream was William Friedkin, who directed the controversial 1973 horror classic, The Exorcist, and then spent the rest of his career mostly wallowing in mediocrity. Now Friedkin is back with Killer Joe, which may not feature a creepy girl with rearranged anatomy, but it does have a top notch cast and a very intriguing premise.

“When 22 year old drug dealer Chris (Hirsch) has his stash stolen by his mother, he has to come up with six thousand dollars quick or he’s dead. Desperate, he turns to “Killer Joe” (McConaughey) when he finds out that his mother’s life insurance policy is worth $50,000. Although Joe usually demands cash up front, he finds himself willing to bend the rules in exchange for Chris’ attractive younger sister, Dottie (Temple), who will serve as sexual collateral until the money comes in… if it ever does. “

This film generated a lot of buzz at the recent SXSW Film Fest, with a number of reports claiming that McConaughey just consumes every frame of film that he’s on. He’s always been a talented and charismatic actor, but hasn’t always shown the best script selection skills. This seems to be the type of meaty story that he can really sink his acting canines into, instead of just letting his washboard abs do the talking though.

It also helps that he’s surrounded with a really solid cast, led by the always reliable Emile Hirsch and eternal MPDG Juno Temple with the rear being brought up by the only redeeming feature of Spider-Man 3, Thomas Haden Church (It still boggles my mind that the goofy Lowell from Wings turned into an actor of his calibre), and possibly the sexiest mouth in the history of Hollywood, Gina Gershon. (What? I think she’s hot, ok!)

The vibe I’m getting from the film seems to hint at a bit of the Coen Bros, with some Tarantino thrown in for good measure, which is a sentence that I just blew my own mind with.

The film will be getting a limited release in the states, but here’s hoping that it gets picked up for wider distribution by one of the bigger studios.
