Andrew Garfield on the origin of that horribly embarrassing Spider-Man singing video, would he join the Avengers and some new behind-the-scenes pics

In yesterday’s Extras we featured a video by Emma Stone and Andrew Garfield that was less a singing Spider-Man commercial than it was evidence to be presented at the Hague in a crime against humanity trial.

Now Andrew Garfield spills to Vulture on how that rather embarrassing (and physically painful to listen to) video came to be. And no, unlike what I was expecting, tequila by the truckload was not involved.

We also get a trio of new behind the scenes images that show Garfield on set, Spidey-ing it up, as well as his thoughts on whether or not he would be up for some Assembling.

Just in case you completely blocked out that video (which is a completely natural response), here’s a refresher.

According to Garfiel, this is how that came about:

“Is that online? That’s hilarious! There’s nowhere to hide! [Laughs.] That was just me and Emma taking the piss. We were given these things to do for different stations and websites, and we said, “This one doesn’t make sense.” We can’t say, “This is so amazing,” so we sang it to make fun of it, and we didn’t even think they would use it. We were so hyper and we had just gotten our second wind, so we were being just completely stupid and ridiculous.”

Since in the Marvel comic book universe, Spider-Man was/is a member of two different Avengers teams, it was only natural that rumours abounded before the release of Joss Whedon’s record-smashing film that the Wall-Crawler would be making an appearance in the film. This despite the fact that Sony currently owns all the film rights to the character, and thus existed in a different “universe”, so to speak, than the Marvel movies.

But if Marvel were somehow able to work out some crossover deal (they did that with Fox, who owns the X-Men rights, to use Magneto’s kids Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch, as they are both also Avengers), would Andrew Garfield be willing to jump into the fray?

“Joss Whedon is a genius, and it’s an incredible cast. I was very, very jealous, and I wanted to jump on the screen and play with them. It killed me that I wasn’t in it, but I understand why, and I’m not insulted. But hey, if Samuel L. Jackson wants to give me a shout, I’m there for the next one!”

C’mon Marvel and Sony! Make it happen! With this reboot, the Spider-Man franchise couldn’t be at a better place to have it crossover. And I’m pretty sure that Marvel give Sony, oh say 1.18 billion reasons for them to sign on the dotted line.
