You'll need to ride like hell in this new trailer for Premium Rush

OK let me be straight with you guys here: I was not too thrilled by the previous trailer for Premium Rush. The premise just didn’t appeal all that much to me. Also leading with a JGL voice-over bone-headedly declaring “I like to ride – fixed gear, no brakes. Can’t stop. Don’t want to either,” never helped matters much either.

This new trailer does look better, but it’s still not quite grabbing me as a must-see, despite the fact that it sports a great cast in Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Michael Shannon and Dania Ramirez and was also written and directed by one of Hollywood’s most prolific writers, David Koepp.

What do you guys think?

Yeah, the bike-riding scenes look cool, but that’s about all that’s really appealing to me. The usually reliable JGL seems to be doing the best he can with the material, but Michael Shannon- who is usually one of the most menacing on-screen actors – seems to be wasted as he appears pretty ineffectual and timid here.

David Koepp is one of the highest paid screenwriters in Hollywood, having written some of the biggest blockbusters of the last few decades: Jurassic Park, Mission: Impossible, Spider-Man, War of the Worlds, Panic Room, Angels and Demon, Carlito’s Way, Death Becomes Her and Toy Soldiers among others.

However, whenever he’s also stepped behind the camera like he’s doing here (see Secret Window and Ghost Town), the results have been a bit lacklustre. Not bad, but just missing that spark of creativity. I’m a huge fan of everybody involved in this so I hope that I’m wrong but his looks like it may just be cycling hard in that same average direction.

Synopsis:

Dodging speeding cars, crazed cabbies, open doors, and eight million cranky pedestrians is all in a day’s work for Wilee (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), the best of New York’s agile and aggressive bicycle messengers. It takes a special breed to ride the fixie – super lightweight, single-gear bikes with no brakes and riders who are equal part skilled cyclists and suicidal nutcases who risk becoming a smear on the pavement every time they head into traffic. But a guy who’s used to putting his life on the line is about to get more than even he is used to when his last envelope of the day – a routine “premium rush” run – turns into a life or death chase through the streets of Manhattan.
