Reboots and remakes may be all the rage in Hollywood right now, but don’t count out films based on board games and childrens toys just yet. Despite being a flop with the critics, Battleship proved that there was still more money to be made in that ocean of merchandising tie-ins.

And now, we’re going Tonka Wonka mad with the next property in development, based on some childhood trucks that most of us have never even heard about.

Tonka trucks are apparently the wolverine of toys, packing playability with steel and durability, and now, Sony wants to make an entire film based on them.

Sony wants to go the Cars route, and turn the property into an animated feature, which will be handled by Sony Pictures Animation, and Adam Sandlers Happy Madison production company.

Fred “Grown Ups” Wolf is currently tasked with getting a script ready, while Sony Pictures Digital Production president Bob Osher issued the following statement about the jump into pre-production:

In its 65 years, Tonka has become more than a toy or a brand; Tonka trucks are a rite of passage for kids all around the world. Time spent with these toys creates memories that last a lifetime as kids are inspired to play using the boundaries of their imagination.

We look forward to creating a family friendly motion picture that brings the Tonka experience to life.

For some reason, I’m not relishing the potential idea of Adam Sandler voicing a cartoon truck. Unless it’s a Toll Booth truck.
