Hans Zimmer to score the MAN OF STEEL

It should come as no surprise that we’re all massive Hans Zimmer fans over here. The man is a versatile genius when it comes to the world of cinematic audio, with scores ranging from epic films through to kids movies as well.

And he’ll be the ears behind a certain last son of Krypton, as Zimmer has signed on to provide the melodic backdrop for the Zack Snyder directed Man of Steel.

Variety has confirmed that Zimmer was hired yesterday, making this his fifth colobaration now with Christopher Nolan as well, as the Dark Knight Rises director is also producing the Superman reboot.

Zimmer has quite a legacy to live up to, considering how iconic the original John Williams composed Superman score from 1978 has become. But considering his vast experience, Oscar nominations and win, he’s most certainly the right man for the job.

Zimmer has always been aware of this comparison, as back in 2010, he explained that Williams score was a reason why he would not want to work on a Superman film in the first place;

John Williams, the greatest living composer — full stop. And that happens to be one of his greatest themes. So no. And I’m not thinking of rewriting Beethoven’s ninth either. It just sounds like a thankless task, you know? So that’s unequivocally a no.

Fortunately, it seems that Zimmer has changed his mind. From the same conversation back then, he revealed how he would lean more towards a score that would be memorable, and not a straight copy;

You are allowed to reinvent, but you have to try to be as good or at least as iconic and it has to resonate and it has to become a part of the zeitgeist. That’s the job.

On ‘Gladiator’ I remember people always talking about ‘Spartacus’ and I kept telling them, ‘When you saw ‘Spartacus’ and how it affected it you, that’s how I want a modern audience to be affected by what we do now.’ So I think ultimately you’re supposed to reinvent.

Man of Steel is shaping up nicely so far, with a solid cast in place, and Christopher Nolans subtle influence now being seen through this news. As for the score, I’m personally hoping that Zimmer takes a cue or two from Christopher Drake, who provided a magnificent theme for All Star Superman back in 2011.

    Zimmer is great, but I fear that losing that iconic Williams theme-song would be a huge loss to the movie.

    I like Zimmer, especially of late. His work with Nolan and the stuff on Sherlock has been awesome.

    That said, I don’t feel like he has the sense of lightness and fun which my ideal Superman requires.

    Unless they’re going for an all out, explosive, Wham Bam, kind of film, you need a lot of heart and a light touch.

    For my money, Christopher Doyle (his work on the last Harry Potter was great) or Michael Giacchino would have been far more preferable to Zimmer.

    Still, I’ll wait and see and I’ll only be too happy is Zimmer actually pulls something off. He must be shitting himself though. No matter how good you are as a film composer, John Williams is a fucking tough act to follow

      I worship at Zimmer’s feet, but I kind of have to agree with you. Giacchino would have been an amazing choice, as his work tend to be a bit of throwback to that era, especially the incredibly job he did on the John Carter OST
