He’s broken both the bat and the law so far in The Dark Knight Rises and Lawless, and for his next trick, it looks like Tom Hardy will be ascending up the highest peak known to man next, as he climbs his way up the fabled Mount Everest.
Sony has grabbed the rights to the non-fiction book Path’s of Glory by Jeffret Archer, which detailed the epic journey and lengths that George Mallory took to conquer the Himilayan mountain. Here’s a synopsis, from the book itself;
This is the story of a man who loved two women, and one of them killed him.
Some people have dreams that are so outrageous that if they were to achieve them, their place in history would be guaranteed. Francis Drake, Robert Scott, Percy Fawcett, Charles Lindbergh, Amy Johnson, Sir Edmund Hillary and Neil Armstrong are among such individuals.
But what if one man had such a dream, and when he’d achieved it, there was no proof that he had fulfilled his ambition?
“Paths of Glory” is the story of such a man. But not until you’ve turned the last page of this extraordinary novel, will you be able to decide if George Mallory should be added to this list of legends, because if he were, another name would have to be removed.
So far, Hardy is on for the lead role, with Sheldon “Up in the air” Turner having cranked out a script, while Jennifer Klein and Dave Bartis produce, and Doug Liman directing.
When Mallory took on Everest for a second time in 1924, he vanished alongside his climbing partner on the slopes, and quick spoiler here, died on the slopes, remaining preserved until his corpse was found just below the summit in 1999.
Did Mallory make it to the top? No one knows, but if he did, he would have broken the achievement set by Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay back in 1953, two men who claimed the bragging rights for being the first people to successfully climb Everest. And not die.
