If there was one film that was criminally underwatched last year, it had to be Goon. Hilarious, heartfelt and starring a Sean William Scott that actually didn’t need to take dumps in cooler boxes to get laughs. In fact, Scott’s mild-tempered ice hockey player with a talent for breaking people’s faces was pretty much the anti-Stifler, and it worked wonderfully.
And now co-star and writer Jay Baruchel has revealed that we may be in for some more blood on the ice.
The young actor broke the news on his Twitter account yesterday that work had started on a sequel to the indie critical smash, and that Jesse Chabot – an associate producer the first film – would be co-writing while Michael Dowse would be returning to the director’s chair :
@BaruchelNDG: “Though I do feel the need to clarify something from the last article I posted, GOON 2 will be written by @jessechabot and myself.”
@BaruchelNDG: “Evan Goldberg will be involved as a producer and we will all be working our asses off to make as awesome a flick as possible.”
@BaruchelNDG: “Please know this: GOON is pretty close to sacred for all of us involved and we would only be entertaining the idea of continuing the 1/2”
@BaruchelNDG: “2/2 saga if we were all equally convinced that Doug, Laflamme, Stevesy, the Russians, Rolie, Ogilvy Belchy and Eva were only getting started”

OK, so that last hashtag is a bit confusing, but hey, I’ve never been the judgmental type. The first Goon never got a local cinema release, but appeared as a home release pretty quickly on our shelves (I can even give a personal confirmation that Mr Video has it available), so you have no excuse to experience what was arguably the best comedy of 2011. The guys at Film School Rejects, Collider and Slashfilm were raving about it last year, and I was pretty bummed when I heard it wasn’t going to get a local release. Then about a month later I walk into Mr Video and there it is, just sitting on the shelf.
