While the Monday Box Office Report usually looks at movies hitting the super-influential North American market, sometimes, a few big name flicks don’t land there first.
That’s the case with James Bond 23, or Skyfall, as the film has made a splash in international markets. A really, really impressive bomb drop of box office receipts and profit so far, that is.
So far, Skyfall has made over $77.7 million at the UK and other foreign markets, with $32.4 million coming from his home ground alone. That’s the second largest opening in UK history, just before Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2.
Skyfall also broke Saturday attendance records in the UK, which is no small feat considering that the film has no 3D gimmick, and thus lower ticket prices, helped in turn by the IMAX opening which contributed $3.5 million to the Bond war effort.
It’s a massive step up so far for the Bond films starring Daniel Craig in the lead role, as his debut flick, Casino Royale, made $40 million dent, while Quantum of Solace was close to the mark with a $67 million opening weekend.
Skyfall is looking like a strong contender so far, something that the box office seems to be confirming right now. And it’s out locally, on November 30.

I’m glad to see that the Daniel Craig gear-shift has come full circle. Having yet to see Skyfall, I don’t know if my suspicions are fair, but I always saw Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace as evolutionary tales that brought Bond into the character we got to know over the years. As such I predicted that the third Craig movie would be a true Bond, but also a truly modern Bond, vindicating much of the character development they did in the previous two films.

That’s precisely how I’ve seen the first two films as well. I doubt we’re ever going to get back the Roger Moore hairy chested love god stage, but the barebones of what originally endeared fans to the character is definitely there.

Interesting you say that, because what exactly is it that endears fans? I’ve met several guys who know Bond purely from the Brosnan years and nothing earlier – it’s a classic generation gap.
Ultimately I suspect we all have this personal idea of what Bond is supposed to be – which are generally off-the-mark of the actual character. As I rule I tend to take every Bond film on its own merits.

Easily, and without a doubt, my most anticipated film for the rest of the year. Even if Django Unchained, Cloud Atlas, Gangster Squad, Life of Pi, The Master, The Hobbit, Looper, Lawless, Lincoln all somehow end up being colossal disappointments, as long as Skyfall is good – which by nearly all accounts, it bloody well is – I’ll be happy.
