Welcome to The Extras! A daily dose of all the smaller movie related news, clips and just plain cool stuff that you might have missed!

What better way to kick off the first (double-sized to make up for lost time) edition of Extras for 2013, than with this awesome video of the World’s Greatest Extra? His name is Jesse Heiman, a name you should probably recognize immediately. What, you don’t? For shame! I mean, he is only one of the most prolific actors of our generation with more than 140 roles in film and TV.

I don’t know about you guys, but I think we’ve just stumbled on the greatest “Where’s Waldo?” styled drinking game of all time.

It’s only the second week of 2013 and people are already trying to destroy your childhood. WeGotThisCovered wants you to know that Nostalgia Sucks: Five Movies You Loved As A Kid (That Are Actually Terrible).

Remember when that first trailer for Pacific Rim launched and all the gamers lost their minds when thought they recognized the voice of GLaDOS, the cake-lying AI from the videogame “Portal”? Well turns out they were right, Del Toro actually got permission from Valve, the game’s developers, to use the character’s voice. Just don’t expect to hear those digital tones in the full movie though, as director Guillermo Del Toro explained:

“I wanted very much to have [GLaDOS], because I’m a big Portal fan. But just as a wink. She’s not cake-obsessed. She’s not out to destroy humanity.”

“I said, ‘Look, there’s no A.I. I’d rather have than GLaDOS,'” but “the filter we’re using is slightly less GLaDOS. Slightly. The one in the trailer I wanted to be full-on GLaDOS.”

Here’s a new pic of Henry Cavill in Man of Steel looking awfully brooding. Either that or he’s desperately trying to work out how he can actually go to the toilet in this new underwear briefs-less suit.

If you had a crappy Christmas and you’re still busy looking for your awwww moment, then look no further than this heart touching story. Just over a week ago, a user on Reddit posted a story of his friend Dan Craft, one of the organizers of the annual New York Film Festival and a lifelong Trekkie, who had been diagnosed with two forms of cancer and had very little time left to live. Dan and his wife had gone to see The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey in IMAX in the hopes of catching the 9 min prologue for Star Trek Into Darkness that played ahead of the film in select venues. Unfortunately, as it turns out, their venue was not one of them, much to Dan’s disappointment.

This story was picked up by various social media platforms and eventually made it’s way to Star Trek director JJ Abrams, who in an amazing display of good will, imediately ditched his normally super-secretive ways and arranged a private screening of the entire film (despite it still being in development) for Dan and his wife at their home. After getting his last wish and watching the movie, Dan went to bed but unfortunately never got out of it again, passing away just a short while later.

Before his passing, Dan’s wife posted this message to tell others of their experience and to thank everybody that made it possible.

“Hi everyone, it’s Daniel’s wife, we are of course sworn to secrecy, BUT we are officially allowed to say we saw it and we enjoyed it IMMENSELY as a film and as a gesture…We were so touched when [Abrams] was concerned that we wouldn’t 100% enjoy the screening as it’s still being worked on……. Be assured we enjoyed it 110%!”

“This is a story of us giving something to him, the ‘internet’ community giving something to him and ultimately being a heartwarming gift to our friends, family and so many others. This story of us (and of course JJAbrams & Bad Robot) being able to give this surprise gift of a screening to a huge movie buff like Daniel, especially a film made by a film maker who obviously makes movies with such care, with a fan like Daniel in mind.”

Faith in humanity restored.

And now for the complete opposite end of the humanity spectrum… There are many that would say that the Twilight franchises pisses all over the vampiric mythology, and now Twilight star Bronson Pelletier – one of the T-shirt allergic werewolves – has taken that to literal lengths. The young actor got kicked off a plane for being too drunk, and while subsequently standing around at LAX, decided to urinate all over the baggage claim area, before receiving a policeman’s knee to his spine for his urinary troubles.

And before you ask, and I know you will, yes there is a video.

If photo-realistic umbrellas with emoticon faces are your thing, then apparently Pixar’s latest short film, The Blue Umbrella, will be just for you. Featuring some of the best looking visuals ever seen in a Pixar film (along with drawn on faces) the short will play ahead of Monster’s University, but here’s a short snippet of it.

You know how we were all racking our brains trying to figure out how the new Bates Motel drama series prequel could tie into the original Psycho, when chronologically the movie takes place half a decade earlier? Turns out all that racking was for nothing. Despite the prequel moniker, the series is actually not holding to the continuity of Alfred Hitchcock’s slasher classic, which writer/producer Carlton Cuse recently revealed:

“The mythology that you think is what dictates the relationship between Norma and Norman is not what it’s going to turn out to be… In some general form, we are going to catch up with a version of the character [Norman] from the movie, but not having it set in the past made it so they weren’t bound absolutely to the continuity of the film and to have everything exactly line up.”

This is possibly the best story you’ll ever read concerning Die Hard, Joel Silver and a $5000 couch.

While most people would be happy with your standard finger lunch press conference when promoting a movie, Arnold Schwarzenegger is clearly not most people. Promoting his newest action romp, The Last Stand, the Governator invited a group of journalists out to Melody Ranch Motion Picture Studio, where he took them all for a ride in his personal tank. Yes, tank. The 50 ton M47 Patton is the very tank that Schwarzenegger drove as a youth in the Austrian army. After regaling the journalists with tales of his time in the army, he then crushed a car. As one does when one is in a tank. You can check out all the pics over here.

While The Avengers will probably not be up any of the major gold come this awards season, you can be damn sure it will be a huge contender for the technical accolades, and looking at this behind the scenes feature on one of the film’s most iconic shots, it’s easy to see why.

I think the Academy needs to add a Best Supporting Actor To Be Ragdolled By An Angry Green Giant category though.

Despite the fact that Lady Sif was essentially relegated to “hot girl god in armour” in Thor, the character has quite the history with the titular thunder god in the comic books. And according to Jamie Alexander, the actress that portrays the raven haired goddess, we’re going to be dipping into that history a bit for the sequel Thor: The Dark World.

“We sort of explore the Sif/Thor relationship a little bit… It’s more getting a feel of who these people are and how they are the way they are with each other.”

Looks like Benedict Cumberbatch’s villainous John Harrison in Star Trek Into Darkness will be taking a page out of Samuel L Jackson’s curse laden book when it comes to attitude. Well at least that what’s co-star Chris Pine claimed, when he spoke to Empire magazine about the character.

“He is Kirk’s shadow of death, his Achilles’ heel. He is just a big mirror reflecting all of Kirk’s insecurities back at him. He is just as intelligent and logical as Spock, but is also one very bad motherf@#$er!”

Cumberbatch himself and director JJ Abrams though were a bit more family friendly with their description about the character.

BC: “He’s sort of superhuman, pretty much unbeatable. Brainy and brawny. He manipulates situations. He’s incarcerated when Kirk is talking to him and yet he still gets Kirk to do his work for him. He pushes him into a corner where the only route to salvation is cooperation. There is a real Hannibal Lecter quality to him.”

JJA: “He was within Starfleet and has now turned against the organization and is hell-bent on revenge. He’s responsible for a very violent, horrific attack in London and then one in the States. He believes he and others were wronged and is focused on destruction. He’s an incredibly brilliant strategist who is aware of various truths that Kirk is not privy to.”

You can get more from the cast, as well as bunch of new images for the film over here.

There’s a new international poster out for Bryan Singer’s Jack the Giant Slayer, but unfortunately all it does is to confirm that these giants are inhabitants of the Uncanny Valley. Besides for the severe case of dead-eye, I also can’t figure out if this guy’s face made out of caramel or clay, because it certainly ain’t skin!

And after months of speculating as to exactly who would be sporting the iconic green nose, Rachel Weisz has confirmed that she will actually be portraying the Wicked Witch of the West in Sam Raimi’s Wizard of Oz prequel, Oz the Great and Powerful.

“It was a fun idea to be playing someone who is really, really bad. I can’t think of any roles that I’ve had like that before… She’s really, really a bad person and she revels in being bad.”

“It’s a Disney film, so I shouldn’t say she is ‘turned on’ by evil, but that’s what it is like… She enjoys it, like the meaner she is the more pleasure she gets.”

With The Raid: Redemption possibly being the best pure action movie I’ve seen in a decade, I simply cannot wait for its sequel The Raid: Berandal to come out. That film was actually supposed to be in production already, but due to various reasons got delayed slightly. But director Gareth Evans has revealed on Twitter that the film will kicking off very soon, and that ass-kicking hero Rama (Iko Kuwais) is going to be getting very little recovery time from the beating he took in the first film.

@ghuwevans: “Ok Raid 2 tidbit, we start shooting on January 19th and the first scene takes place 2hrs after the first film ends.”

Pajiba has done a round-up of their 10 Most Scathing and Bitchy Film Reviews of 2012, and it’s a work of vitriolic genius. My personal favourite (which also probably doubles as my express ticket to Hell) would be this excerpt from their review of musical drama Sparkle: “The second most embarrassing thing to happen to Whitney Houston this year.”

I understand bending over backwards for your job, but this poster for The Last Exorcism – Part 2 may taking things slightly too far. It’s a certainly an eye-catching poster, and much better than the usual schtick of just replacing letters with numbers and calling it cool.

Speaking of things trying to be cool, we end off today’s supersized edition on two new clips from Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters, which is looking more and more like it’s going to completely live up to the usual “movies released in January suck” trend.
