Paul Walker is having some car trouble in JHB in these two trailers for VEHICLE 19

You got to hand it to the 2010 Soccer World Cup, it really put South Africa on the world stage. There’s been a splurge of movies and TV series based here recently, and the latest sees Paul Walker once again behind the wheel of a car, driving real fast. No surprises there.

Except this is no kitted out street racer he’s driving. No, it’s a rental car. And we all know what rental cars are like: Underpowered, funny smelling, and if you’re lucky they’ll throw in the optional extra of a gagged and bound girl in your boot for free!

A recently paroled man is given the wrong vehicle at a rental company and stumbles upon key evidence in a corruption trial. After being framed by crooked cops, he must circumvent an entire police force in a city he doesn’t know if he is to clear his name and get the evidence to the prosecution in time.

And just because we have a thing for trailers in Japanese (or Dramaticnese, as we like to call it) (Ok we don’t really call it that), here’s the second international trailer, which gives the movie a different feel. A completely different feel.

In case you didn’t pick it up from the trailers, the hook for South African writer/director/producer Mukunda Michael Dewill’s Vehicle 19 is that the entire film is shot from inside the car that Walker is driving. It’s this rather unique setup that landed the script on the vaunted Black List in 2011. However, as interesting as that is, I’m not quite sure if Dewill has the directing chops to actually cash in on his idea. Besides for unique perspective, the trailers make it look like it could be a standard action thriller, but just with a cinematography twist.

There’s no release date yet (local or international), but you can expect to join Paul Walker on his JHB inner city game drive some time in the next few months.

I’ll always remember him from Die Vierde Kabinet. Bush Louw. What a character name. Only beaten by Frank Opperman’s Yster Swart (Brixston Moord en Roof).
