Monday Box Office Report – Witch Hunters, oil barons and star-studded abominations

Come one, come all, because we’ve got a bunch of new movies to show ya! Despite the fact that the North American box office had three new films to offer patrons this past weekend, the takings were rather meagre overall. Hansel and Gretel popped in to clean up some witches, Jason Statham began to practice a Texan drawl and Movie 43 arrived to comments such as “Oh god, kill it with fire”, starting a fourth age of darkness and pain.

Below average expectations aside, someone had to have made more money than the other, and that film was…

And that film was indeed Hansel and Gretel. The Witch Hunters took in a modest $19 million in ticket sales, beating such similar films like Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter and The Brothers Grimm, and it will most likely recoup it’s humble $50 million budget after being sidelined on shelves for the better part of a year.

Moving on, Mama got knocked down a peg this past weekend, while The Silver Linings Playbook held firm at the number three spot. For everyone else, here’s who made what;

  • Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters – $19 million
  • Mama – $12.8 million
  • Silver Linings Playbook – $10 million
  • Zero Dark Thirty – $9.8 million
  • Parker – $7 million
  • Django Unchained – $5.005 million
  • Movie 43 – $5 million
  • Gangster Squad – $4.2 million
  • Broken City – $4 million
  • Les Miserables – $3.9 million

Despite the fact that Jason Statham isn’t going to run out of fans who happen to enjoy movies wherein he punches people in the face really hard, Parker hasn’t been a smash hit so far. Trailing in with a fifth place debut, the film has made less cash than his other solo flick, Safe, but it’s still a few bucks higher than the visual equivalent of a bad acid trip, Crank 2: High Voltage at least.

With a ton of stars onboard in small roles and some decent marketing, you’d expect Movie 43 to have done slightly better, instead of winding up in seventh place with only $5 million so far. Critics are hailing it as one of the worst films ever so far, with Variety calling it an “An appalling misfire”, while THR labels it as something that is “so painfully unfunny, so screamingly bad that it immediately qualifies as one of the worst films of all time”.

I kinda want to watch it now. Just to see if it can top my beloved The FP.

    I’m not gonna lie. All the bad press for Movie 43 has really made me want to see it now. I missed the press screening last week due to my dad’s 60th birthday. Stupid dad.
