Yes, it’s barely been a week since we saw the first trailer for the Amanda Seyfried starring biopic of 70’s porn icon Linda Lovelace, Lovelace, but let’s be honest: for a film that focuses on a woman who became famous for getting freaky deaky in front of the cameras, that first trailer was quite tame.

But that was the American trailer, and we all know that while they live off a diet of saturated fats and over the top violence, a little bit of titillation tends to ruffle their feathers. But the rest of the world tends to like their sexy times, which is exactly what this new trailer is filled with.

In 1972—before the internet, before the porn explosion—”Deep Throat” was a phenomenon: the first scripted pornographic theatrical feature film, featuring a story, some jokes, and an unknown and unlikely star, Linda Lovelace. Escaping a strict religious family, Linda discovered freedom and the high-life when she fell for and married charismatic hustler Chuck Traynor. As Linda Lovelace she became an international sensation—less centerfold fantasy than a charming girl-next-door with an impressive capacity for fellatio. Fully inhabiting her new identity, Linda became an enthusiastic spokesperson for sexual freedom and uninhibited hedonism. Six years later she presented another, utterly contradictory, narrative to the world—and herself as the survivor of a far darker story.

That’s more like it! The first trailer came across very Hallmark-y whereas this seems to show just the right combination of playful charm and personal drama, the same combo that made Paul Thomas Anderson’s Boogie Nights such a success. And while this movie may not boast a ludicrously endowed Mark Wahlberg, it does appear to have a few tricks up its sleeve. And “tricks up its sleeve” is totally an euphemism for fellatio.

Lovelace will getting it on in cinemas on August 9, 2013.

  1. Looks good. Hopefully it will join classics like Boogie Nights and Wonderland.
