Hearing that Disney had put the breaks on Clone Wars animated series was something that broke my heart in the last couple of months. One of the best shows on TV, that really knew what to do with the Star Wars license, dead amidst a sea of unresolved story threads and cliffhangers.

Still, at least it wasn’t the end of the Star Wars animated universe, as a new show was shortly announced afterwards. Star Wars Rebels is picking up the Force for an all new focus and storyline and over the weekend, more details were revealed about that upcoming show.

Over at Star Wars Celebration Europe, new images were shown off of the upcoming show, which according to executive producer Dave Filoni, will be heavily influenced on an artistic level by Ralph McQuarrie. McQuarrie, who was the man who visualized the Star Wars universe, is pretty much responsible for all the designs in the first Star Wars trilogy, from Darth Vader looking like a badass through to light sabers being elegant weapons of a more civilized time.

Star Wars Rebels takes place between the events of Episodes III and IV, and it looks like this time, the Jedi are going to be less of a focus as the pilots of the young Rebel Alliance take the center stage. It’s the perfect format freally. Jedi may have awesome force powers, but it’s the rogues and daring of that galaxy far, far away that make Star Wars special. And with a chance to see the rise of characters such as Han Solo, Wedge Antilles and various other bit players, I’m kind of excited.

Star Wars Rebels kicks off later in the year with a one hour special.

  1. Haven’t really started watching Clone Wars yet, but knowing it ends on cliff-hangers and unresolved plot points, makes me not want to start and then rage at the TV when it ends. Got to keep the blood pressure in check you know.
