Beer, bones and borror. Hey give me a break, I didn’t want to break the chain of B’s. Three new films debuted over the North American box office weekend, and all three fell before another movie with a rpominent B in it’s name. And from there, it just got worse for any Hollywood executives looking to make some cash that weekend.

Epic young adult action film The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones, pub-crawling end of the world trilogy ender The World’s End and horror flick You’re Next all bombed at the box office, as Lee Daniel’s The Butler maintained an iron grip on the top spot. While that film went on to claim another $17 million, all of the new releases that appeared failed to even reach the $10 million mark. Mortal Instruments was hit pretty hard by this low turnout. The Twilight wannabe is just one of many such films that has failed to claim the gap left by the departure of that franchise, with movies such as Beautiful Creatures and The Host failing just as badly.

The World’s End though, is an odd film to have to be in such a situation. While it did open up higher than previous Edgar Wright movies, Hot Fuzz and Shaun of the Dead came out several years ago, and in fewer cinemas to boot. While The World’s End is on track to earn more than Hot Fuzz in the states, it won’t be by much, and will most likely do better business in its native UK. As for everyone else, here’s how they did over the weekend.

  • Lee Daniel’s The Butler – $17 Million
  • We’re the Millers – $13.5 Million
  • The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones – $9.3 Million
  • The World’s End – $8.9 Million
  • Planes – $8.5 Million
  • Elysium – $7.1 Million
  • You’re next – $7 Million
  • Percy Jackson: Sea of monsters – $5.2 Million
  • Blue Jasmine – $4.3 Million
  • Kick-Ass 2 – $4.2 Million

Kick Ass 2 is bombing horribly right now. In its second week, the film is already on it’s way out, and has only managed to make around $38 million worldwide. Departures from the the top ten over the weekend include 2 Guns, The Smurfs 2 and Jobs. Jobs has done exceptionally poorly. Less than two weeks before it slumped to 12th most watched film in the top ten, it’s made only $12 million so far in North America. We’ll call that an iFail.
