Monday Box Office Report – An Insidious weekend

 

Horror movies rarely get a date beyond Halloween that is perfect for a fresh opening. But on Friday the 13th, Insidious Chapter 2 took a machete and slaughtered the North American box office. Here’s a look at how that film scared up audiences. Added bonus: Local figures!

With a $41 million debut, Insidious Chapter 2 tripled the box office introduction of the original film, which made $13.3 million when introduced to audiences back in 2011. Year on year, it’s a million behind 2012’s Hotel Transylvania, as September is usually a quiet month when it comes to films. Luc Besson’s The Family also debuted over the weekend, hitting the number 2 spot with a $14.5 million take. It’s a generous haul for this particular film, despite word of mouth being that The Family isn’t exactly some of his finest material to date.

• Percy Jackson: Sea of monsters – $1.8 Million

The World’s End departed the top ten this week, having made a global total so far of just $40.8 million. Despite positive word of mouth, and having to still open in several other territories, it looks like the final chapter in the Cornetto trilogy is destined for the cult heap.
