I know, I know… while news of a tv series does not quite qualify as news here at The Movies, there are a few exceptions to the rule and when it involves the comic book universe, we are all ears! Hot off the heels of the success of shows such as CW’s Arrow, it seems like we might get taken back to Gotham once again, but this time without the Dark Knight.
Bruno Heller, creator of The Mentalist, is reported to be set to create a series based on Commissioner James Gordon, but in his younger years as a Gotham detective. As this will take place pre-Batman he is very unlikely to turn up in any shape or form, but the door is open for many of his older villains to have some screen time but I guess we’ll just have to wait until we receive further news regarding casting and plot.
I’m quite excited about this, though. While my only concern might be an over-saturation of comic book franchises on the big and the small screen, this is a great chance for Gotham to claim back some of its detective noir roots and tell some truly fantastic stories…and perhaps even let us glimpse once again at the seedy underbelly of the Dark Knight’s city. The last time we saw (New) Gotham on the small screen was in the short-lived Birds of Prey series, which wasn’t very good at all. It followed a crippled Oracle, the Huntress and the daughter of the Black Canary and it didn’t adhere to DC canon at all, which was unfortunate.
So, tell me – who do you want to see don the ‘stache and trench coat and do you think Bruno Heller has what it takes to bring a younger Gotham to life?

Good question. They will be on two different channels, so I suspect they will be completely independent.

While this may turn out to be absolutely amazing, I can’t help but think that this just another case of Warner Bros/DC not knowing what the hell to do with it’s brand.
One of the reasons Marvel has been so successful with their properties is the coherent, well thought out plan that they not only came up with, but have the balls to stick with, even if it means making some out there choices.
The impression I get from WB/DC is that they’re just showing stuff at a wall and seeing what sticks.

I wonder how they’ll approach it. I see Gotham as a very bleak setting, a city spiraling down into corruption until it gets to a point where vigilantes start appearing, and eventually, Batman. That’s not a very kid-friendly, action-comedy environment.
