Uh Houston, we’ve got a box office smash on our hands. Apparently, Kervyn was not the only person who came out of Gravity, delirious with joy and amazement. The film debuted over the weekend at the North American box office, easily taking a first place. It wasn’t the only debut this week though.

With $55.5 million, Gravity benefited from some aggressive marketing that clearly funneled butts into seats, with 3D venues boasting impressive hauls. This dropped Cloudy 2 to second place, although that film has nothing to worry about as it has already made $71.7 million worldwide. Not Pixar cash by any means, but a solid lead so far for that food-based film. Here’s how the rest of the top ten did as well.

  • Gravity – $55.5 million
  • Cloudy with a chance of meatballs 2 – $21.5 million
  • Runner Runner – $7.6 million
  • Prisoners – $5.7 million
  • Rush – $4.4 million
  • Don John – $4.16 million
  • Baggage Claim – $4.12 million
  • Insidious Chapter 2 – $3.8 million
  • Pulling Strings – $2.5 million
  • Enough Said – $2.1 million

Runner Runner went all in and came out broke. Debuting over the weekend in the states, the Ben Affleck starring film made just a mere $7.6 million, despite being in third place on the top ten. Rush has also found itself being lapped, where strong reviews and word of mouth have failed to push it back into first place and leaving it trailing behind with a poor domestic take of just $18 million in total. In other countries though, it seems to be doing slightly better, with that global total being over $40 million so far.

Departures from the top ten this week include The Butler, We’re the Millers, The Family and Instructions not included. We’re the Millers had a particularly good run though. After 8 weeks in the top ten, the movie made $247.9 million worldwide. Not bad for a movie that cost $37 million to make.
