There are many different genres for filmmakers to dabble in, from action to thriller to romance to comedy to drama and much, much more. Occasionally though, filmmakers have such a distinct voice with their films that they become genres unto themselves.
And the latest entry in the Wes Anderson genre, also known as “Charming and Quirky Hipster Indie Movies Where People Have Daddy Issues and Fabulous Facial Hair”, is The Grand Budapest Hotel, the first trailer for which has just been released.
“The Grand Budapest Hotel” recounts the adventures of Gustave H, a legendary concierge at a famous European hotel between the wars, and Zero Moustafa, the lobby boy who becomes his most trusted friend. The story involves the theft and recovery of a priceless Renaissance painting and the battle for an enormous family fortune — all against the back-drop of a suddenly and dramatically changing Continent.
Look, at this stage of the game you’re either on board with Anderson’s special brand of quirky, or you think him a completely overrated buffoon. I fall in the first category, which is why I was grinning like an idiot throughout. That and that absolutely stellar cast.
And did you notice the very not-widescreen aspect ratio? That’s because, according to a tweet from Refocused Media, Anderson actually shot the film in 3 different aspect ratios in reference to the 3 different time periods that the film takes place in. Because he’s hipster like that.
Audiences can start checking in (or out, depending on your tastes) of The Grand Budapest Hotel from March 7, 2014.
